WHEN THE BUSLOAD of teenagers, all winners
of USA WEEKEND’S 2007 HSM Showstopper
Award, attended the glittery High School Musical 2 pre
miere at Disneyland in August, the young fans weren’t
the only ones who were wowed.
“I met that group of kids, and I think that would be
an incredible opportunity, to be a part of something
that you consider iconic or larger than life, something
that you have followed,” said High School Musical 2
star Monique Coleman of the students’ win. “To do
something like that at your own school and be
recognized... I think they’re celebrities in
their own right, and I’m really excited
for them and proud of them, and I
think that’s what High School Musical
is all about. It’s not just about us and
our individual success. It’s about bring-
ing people together and following your %
dreams. Those kids followed their dreams,
and that’s how they got here to Disneyland to share
this with us.”
It sounds like a Hollywood fantasy, but it was a real
ity for students at Chaffey High in Ontario, Calif. Their
spring production of The Music Man was selected from
among more than 700 entries nationwide to receive our
inaugural HSM Showstopper Award, recognizing the
best in American high school musicals.
Chaffey drama teacher David Masterson and step
son Jonathan Espinoza, who starred as Harold Hill in
the show, led the 120-person school contingent that at
tended the special screening. From their VIP spots along
the red carpet, the kids were able to chat up, hug and
photograph HSM 2 stars like Coleman and get a close
