“That’s a tough one,” said
Byrd. “The teams up north
are just so far ahead of us.
We’re looking at placing
within the top 65 runners.
That’s our goal for this year.
We’re working to get further
up that pole. If we can rank
in the top 10, that would be
super for us.”
The Lady Eagles aren’t the
only group of runners mak
ing the Carrollton trip from
Northside. The Eagles boys
cross country squad finished
second in last weekend’s
region meet. Stockbridge

of the team championship

Input sought on dove season
Special to the Journal
In response to recent
public comment regarding
Georgia’s dove hunting sea
son structure, the Georgia
Department of Natural
Resources, Wildlife Resources
Division has created a con
venient online dove season
questionnaire, available at
www.gohuntgeorgia.com.
The purpose of the question
naire is to provide hunters
an opportunity to share their
opinions on certain aspects of
Georgia’s current dove hunt
ing season schedule.
Doves are regulated under
the Migratory Bird Treaty
Act. Under this authority,
states must adhere to the
USFWS framework which
provides for an opening date
no earlier than Sept. 1, a
closing date no later than
Jan. 15, no more than three
seasons and a total of no
more than 70 days. Georgia’s
current season conforms to
this framework. However,
considering the recent feed
back regarding the desire
for more late-season hunting
opportunity (i.e. additional
days in January), WRD is
assessing the possibility of
adjusting the current season
structure to accommodate
the public input.
Upon assessment of pub
lic input, WRD will evalu
ate potential season alterna
tives and present these to
the public through a series of
public meetings in January
2008. Based on those meet
ing responses, WRD may or
may not propose a regula
tion change to the Board
of Natural Resources. The
board will review any submit
bettered host Jones County
by 11 for second place, 94
to 105.
“They really shocked me,”
said Byrd. “They went out
there with the heart and
the guts and determination.
They decided they were
going to put their best foot
forward, and they did it. I’m
really impressed with them.
They made my day.”
Adrian Delestre of
Northside placed fifth overall
at 18:03 (winning time was
16:45). Four other Eagles
came in at under 20 minutes:
Michael Gonzales (11th),
Stedman Grant (22nd), Josh
Anderson (27th) and Kyle
Dzwonkwonski (29th).
In the past, Byrd said only
one current member of her
boys team has run at the
state level.
“It’ll be like a shocker,” she
said about the new experi
ence the runners have today.
“To see all those top run
ners. I have a lot of seniors,
so with the young guys com
ing back this will give them
a taste and they will do bet
ter next year.”
Next year and years after
that are looking better for
Northside in cross country.
Byrd said it’s a challenge to
get freshmen to participate
because they aren’t sure
what cross country running
is all about or they are leery
of running for three miles.
“Everybody will hear
about the region champion
ship and region runner-up,”
said Byrd. “They will want
to be part of that champion
ship. That’ll be a plus.”
The success really start
ed in the 2006 season with
the Northside girls winning
the county championships.
But the sport is enjoying a
big boon this year because
Warner Robins High had
visited more than 10 events
in cities across the U.S. After
more than 764 dyno runs on
a DynoJet 248 C - a machine
that measures the vehicle’s
