A church for people who don't go to church
Special to the Journal
A battleship actually. That’s the
analogy every member is taught
at Harvest. This church is a battle
ship deployed on a mission from
God.
Pastor Jim Cowart chuckles at
this description and his eyes light
up as he talks about this church
that has experienced such tremen
dous growth in the last few years.
“Harvest is a church being built
for people who don’t go to church.
In some ways that’s like building a
steak house for vegetarians!”
But evidently Harvest knows a
little something about attracting
“non-church folks”. Since begin
ning in September of 2000 with
just the Cowart family Harvest has
grown at an incredible rate now
averaging 1,000 in worship every
Sunday in the Galleria Cinemas.
Q: So tell us a little more
about this “Battle ship” anal
ogy-
Jim: “Well, in our membership
class we use this comparison to
'help our people see that we are on
a mission. Cruises are great for a
vacation. You get to sit back, eat
good food and have people wait on
you. I don’t ever want Harvest to
get a “cruise ship mentality”.
So we talk about Jesus as our
Commander who has given us
orders (The Great Commission &
The Great Commandment) and we
are on a rescue mission to save the
world. It would be very frustrating
to think you are going on a cruise
but accidentally find yourself on a
battleship. That’s why we tell peo
ple up front. This is a battle ship
and if you want to be a member

every Sunday at 9, 10:15, and

here you have to find a ministry
and start inviting your friends who
don’t go to a church.”
Q: It sounds like you have
some high expectations from
your members.
Jim: “We do. But we’re find
ing that people really want their
life to have meaning and value.
What’s more important than help
ing someone get to know Jesus and
go to heaven? When people start
seeing life change in themselves
and their friends it’s really excit
ing.”
Q: That’s sounds cool. You
guys are in construction.
What’s the new building going
to be like?
Jim: “We purchased 43 acres on
highway 41 and the building will
be about 36,000 sq. ft. and seat
around 800 people. The new build
ing will have a lot of similarities to
the theater. We’re going for a cool
look that non-churched people will
find attractive.”
Q: You’ve been meeting in
the theater for several years
now. Will Harvest change much
once you move into your own
building?
Jim: “We get that question a lot.

Harvest Church pastor Jim Cowart stands in front of the soon-to-be new church home currently under
construction.
Some people seem to think; “Now
you’ll be a real church”. We just
kind of laugh at that. Church is
not about the building. We’ll have
the same mission and purpose. We
just see the building as a tool to
help us accomplish that mission.”
Q: How do you plan to use
the rest of the 43 acres of your

Jim: “I get really excited about
this! We’re working on some plans
to build a really cool Park for the
community. There’s going to be an
awesome play area for kids that
will have some water elements
to play in ... then walking trails
and some animals too. We want to

Favorable working relationships
While dining in a well-known
family restaurant, I observed
the manager as he worked with
his employees. People were waiting in
line during the rush hour. As soon as a
table was cleared, other customers were
seated.
The fairly young manager did not use
his power to demand efficiency from those
under his control. Instead, he patiently
helped with accommodations. To lessen
the waiting period for patrons, he assisted with clearing and
cleaning tables.
The manager’s understanding nature helped his employ
ees to remain “calm and collected” when caught up in what
might otherwise have been confused situations.
Being in the position of authority, a manager can

Faith without works is dead
The misinterpretation of a passage
in Ephesians leads Christians to
falsely believe that a public pro
fession of faith in Christ assures their sal
vation and gives them license to continue
in sin with impunity.
Many misconstrue Ephesians 2:8-9 to
decree that faith alone - without the
manifestation of good works - secures
one’s salvation. It reads as follows: “For
by grace you have been saved through
faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of
works, lest anyone should boast.”
Whereas the author is obliquely making the point that
good works are the outcome, not the cause of salvation,
many people are falsely led to believe that good works have
no bearing on salvation, that faith is the only credential
