Georgia association names
HCBOE Board of Distinction

The Georgia School Boards
Association has recognized
the Houston County Board
of Education as a 2007
School Board of Distinction.
The Board first earned
the distinction in 2004 and
recently completed a new
recertification process.
“I am proud that our board
is recognized as a School
Board of Distinction,” com
mented Pamela Greenway,
board chairman. “Our board
and school system constantly
seek to reach higher levels of
excellence. This honor is one
indicator that we are achiev
ing our goal to continuously
improve.”
To be considered a School
Board of Distinction, boards
must comply with GSBA
Standards for Local Boards
of Education'.
The standards are intend
ed to help the board and
superintendent develop
vision, goals and plans for
improvement. Eight areas
of responsibility are covered
by the standards: vision/phi
losophy/goals, systematic
improvement, organization
al structure, board opera
tions: policy development,
board operations: board
meetings, board operations:
personnel, board operations:
financial management, and
board/staff/community rela
tions.
For the 2007 designation,
GSBA requires boards to
appoint a Standards Review
Committee to include two
board members, one school
system administrator
and two community lead-

every two years, requiring

Lindsey Elementary School fifth grader Alexis Shearer practices her stacking
technique prior to competing in the World Sport Stacking Association competition
Thursday at the school. Shearer and the rest, along with many many more around the
world - including third, fourth and fifth graders at LES - were trying to get into the
Guiness World Book of Records for the most people staging at multiple locations on
one day. A reported 164,416 had registered around the world leading up the event.
