Sadly, the lottery “bene

its own making - gambling
addicts who purchase tick
ets compulsively. No matter
how you look at it, employ
ees don’t work for just any
corporation; they work for
the state. And they shouldn’t
get such huge bonuses, espe
' daily when the tab is dispro
portionately being paid by
. low-income families.
As I mentioned earlier, gov
ernment policies point toward
what is good. Unfortunately
the lottery does not. The
games appeal to behavior
that should not be commend
ed by the state. “Today could
! be the day” is the slogan
declared in Georgia’s lottery
i ads. It’s an appeal to instant
i gratification and an approach
; to finances that rarely works
| in our favor. And, inciden-
I tally, it’s not something we
; want the students who ben
j, efit from lottery revenue to
i take to heart.
The get-rich-quick mes
( sage undermines the ethic of
! hard work, stewardship and
' saving that have long been
the formula for financial sta
bility in this country. Having
the state of Georgia lure
people to recklessly spend
their money runs counter to
; the purpose and mission of
| government, especially at a
! time when personal saving in
I America is so low (below one
; percent) and many are feel
! ing a financial crunch,
j Now I’m sure some of you
‘ reading will disagree with my
i analysis of the lottery. You
» view it as harmless volun
i tary fun and simply a form
| of entertainment. And for
► many players it is. But the
l state-run lottery also means
‘ that Georgia is in the gam
bling business - and, as

Diabetes Diet Instruction -
Call for schedule of classes. This
class, taught by Sandra Brenner,
RD, Ph.D., is for individuals with
diabetes who need a diet review
or people with newly diagnosed
Diabetes Type 2. A physician diet
prescription is required. Call 478-

Diabetes “In Control”
Course - Call for schedule.
This course recognized by the
American Diabetes Association
is taught by registered nurses,
dietitians, and certified diabetes
educators. The course consists
of a one-hour initial assessment
and education, a two-hour nutri
tion class, and two five-hour com
prehensive education classes.
Follow up at three, six and 12
months after completion of the
entire program. Physician referral
is required. Medicare and most
insurance plans accepted. Call

Diabetes Exercise Program
- An exercise program specifically
for adults with diabetes who would
like to learn more about the correct
times and methods for exercising
in relation to diet and medica
tion. The program is administered
by a team of nurses, exercise
physiologists and a certified dia
betes educator. A dietitian is also
available for one-on-one consulta
tions with each participant. Health
