with a 17-3 Warner Robins
lead. Wilkerson was doing
everything in an early 7-0
run from blocking a shot
in transition to assisting
Tiandra Billings’ fast-break
hoop to nailing a 3-point
shot.
Wilkerson had two treys
in the period and anoth
er assist on an inbound to
Derakia Brown.
Though the Demonette’s
shooting went down, she
was still causing trouble on
defense with another transi
tion block and a steal where
she passed off to Billings on
the run. Billings, who had
nine points total, canned
a long in the closing sec
onds of the half, sending
her team into halftime up
25-14.
Hawkinsville, with that
state-title experience,
wouldn’t stay too far down.
The Lady Devils scored four
baskets in the third quarter
off of turnovers and was
trailing by four, 34-30, at
1:30.
It was Kyanne Holland
of Warner Robins cutting
underneath the basket and
converting a pass from up
top by Antoinette Howell
that ended the quarter at
36-31. That was the sec
ond high-low connection
between the two in the
third.
The Demonettes con
trolled the fourth period
12-6 as Shanerika Parks
scored on a second shot and
Danielle Gazaway stole an
inbound and got the ball to
Wilkerson for two.
HIRAM BOYS 64, HOUSTON
COUNTY 50
It’s another year that the
Houston County High boys
basketball team will not
be winning its own holiday
tournament. Jody Dean’s
young Bear squad trailed
the Hiram Hornets from
Paulding County the entire
contest, Hiram pulling away
on a 19-9 edge in the third
quarter.
Geo Stotts led the Bears
with nine points, seven
coming in the fourth quar
ter. Forward Jalani Phillips
had seven, six coming in the
first half.
Hiram had five points off
of Houston turnovers and
hit three long jumpers in a
first quarter run that had
them up 21-8 at 3:47. The
Bears made a push behind
two blocks and two short
jumpers from Brandon
Davey and a Rico Anderson
3-pointer off a Buddy Bivins
steal.
Hiram hit a 3 from a cor
ner at the 25-second mark
arid took a 25-18 edge into
the second period.
With Marquis Perine tak
ing in a turnover for two,
the Bears got as close as
four in the second period.
But Houston couldn’t take
advantage of four offensive
rebounds, and the Hornets
put four on the board off
takeaways. Brandon Scott,
though, came back with a
pass to Jarrid Nunn, who
was alone at the basket, and
points off a steal. Hiram’s
lead at the half was nine,
35-26.
Houston, in the third,
would give up a second shot
from the foul line and a
turnover basket within sec
onds of each other to fall
down 42-28. Roger Stanton
of Houston had both a 3-
pointer and assist to Davey
off an offensive rebound,
but
Hiram still led by 19, 54-
35, after the quarter.
LADY BEARS 51, HIRAM 24
Tonia Williams, Houston
County’s all-state candi
date, turned over top scor
ing honors for one night to
sophomore and fellow for
ward Kourtney Thomas.
Behind Thomas’ 17 points
(most of which came from
Williams assists), the Lady
Bears pulled away from

start 1-0 in the Bear Brawl
round robin format.
Williams finished with 12
points as she sat out most
of the second quarter with
two personal fouls. Junior
forward Alexis Hewitt had
eight points.
It was no size advantage
for Sid Baxley’s Houston
club against Hiram, and
Williams picked up her first
foul on the first possession
for the visitors.
That didn’t stop Williams
from finding Thomas open
on the weak side, in the
high-low set twice and in
transition, all in the first
quarter. She also had two
steals, one leading to a score
for freshman reserve Jayde
Sparks.
Hiram, shooting only 1-
for-8 at the foul line, went
into the second quarter
down 16-3.
At 6:27, Williams had foul
No. 2 and sat on Baxley’s
bench the rest of the half.
Starter Janesa Johnson was
also benched with two fouls.
Hiram pulled to within nine,
21-12, at the half, all five
Houston points in the quar
ter coming from Thomas.
The Lady Hornets had it
down to six in the third
quarter as they opened the
half with a patient 3-point
er.
The Lady Bears missed
five inside opportunities
before finally cashing in a
Thomas steal at 1:42.
Thomas knocked, the ball
away a second time and got
a pass back from Farrah
Lewis to put Houston up
30-20 after the third.
Williams had three more
assists in the fourth, mak
ing a long outlet to Hewitt,
finding Ashlee Burkett
underneath and passing
into Hewitt on the post. She
had two steals and scored on
a Johnson inbound. Burkett
had three steals in the sec
ond half.
