WR Aquanauts compete in USA championships
Special to the Journal
Per a release from the
Warner Robins Aquanauts
Swim Team: In keeping with
the spirit of sports excel
lence for Warner Robins
athletes, six members of the
Warner Robins Aquanauts
Swim Team participated in
the USA Swimming State
Championships Meet at the
Georgia Tech Aquatic Center
this past weekend.
All six swimmers, according
to the release, are longtime
members of the Aquanauts
and train year-round. The
USA Swimming competition,
according to the release, pits
the best swimmers from
Georgia in three days of
exciting competition. Some
participants in this meet
are experienced competitors
from the 2004 Olympics and
others are hopefuls for the
2008 Olympic Games sched
uled for Beijing, China.
Swimming for Warner
Robins were Kaylie Hamborg
(home schooled), Patrick
Cossart (Perry High School),

superstar named Michael
Vick leading his offense.
Vick will not be playing for
the Falcons now, next year,
if ever again. Suddenly, the
Falcons job became less and
less appealing, and Petrino
became less and less appeal
ing to those players still
there.
So why are so many people
in the Falcons organization
angry? Something tells me it
wasn’t so much that Petrino
left with three games still
to go, but that he left on his
own. Maybe there were those
like DeAngelo Hall hoping he
would be gone at the season’s
end, but these are the types
who wanted the satisfaction
of seeing him booted out,
canned, fired.
Nobody can say that ulti
mately Petrino isn’t in a bet
ter place for him. There are
still questions about the tim
ing and how he said his final
“goodbyes.”
What was the deal with
having a press conference in
Arkansas at close to mid
night EST on Tuesday? That
was about 24 hours after the
end of the Monday Night loss
to the Saints. Was Arkansas
so worried about Petrino
changing his mind that all
this was thrown together at

The swimmers are coached
by Wes Hamborg and Tracy
Burkholder and train at the
Memorial Pool in Warner
Robins. Hamborg set a gru
eling training regime for the
swimmers through the fall
months in preparation for
this competition.
Approximately 500 swim
mers competed in the events
over the weekend.
The WRA Men’s relay team
set team records in the 200
medley relay, the 400 medley
relay and the 400 free relay.
The six swimmers realized
10 personal best times as
follows: Hanson, 100 Fly,
200 Fly, 100 Free; Hamborg,
100 Fly, 200 Fly, 100 Back,
100 Free; Cossart, 50 Free;
Nathan Meece, 100 Breast;
Niemantsverdriet, 100 Back,
200 Back.
Hamborg, according to the
the last minute?
Why not make your
decision to switch jobs on
Tuesday, inform Arthur
Blank and Rich McKay that
same day, tell your players
on Wednesday (because they
had Tuesday off) instead of
writing that letter, and then
go to Arkansas and start “pig
sooeying.”
Maybe this is the answer:
For Arkansas, Petrino was
the second choice after the
Wake Forest coach. But for
Petrino, the Razorbacks were
probably his third choice
behind LSU and Auburn.
BULLDOG TALK: With
Georgia preparing itself for
Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl,
it’s a good time to look ahead
to the 2008 campaign. Fellow
Bulldogs, this is the schedule
to end all schedules. Alabama
and Tennessee are coming to
Athens. We must face LSU in
Baton Rouge and Florida on
back-to-back weekends.
But there’s one listing
here that stands out for his
toric reasons. On Sept. 20
the Bulldogs have a non-con
ference game with Arizona
State, the team that contend
ed for the Pac-10 champion
ship this year, in Tempe.
Why is this historic?
Georgia never goes out West
to play a football game. For
those of us who have been
around for a half-century or
less, we know of only a few

release, led the Aquanauts in
number of events with seven.
Hamborg set a personal best
time in four events: the 100
Butterfly, the 100 freestyle,
the 100 backstroke and the
200 butterfly. She was pre
viously selected as the top
women’s swimmer in a meet
in Rockford earlier this fall.
She has been swimming for
seven years.
When asked to comment
on her swimming career she
said, “I enjoy swimming," she
said. "It is a big part of my
life and a big commitment.
All the hard work is worth it
when I have a meet like this
past weekend!”
Hanson swam three indi
vidual events and four relays.
In the 200 yard butterfly,
he swam a time of 2:07.41.
That was a personal best and
eclipses his previous best in
this race by an astonishing
eight seconds.
The Aquanauts are a USA
Swimming sanctioned com
munity team. They swim at
Memorial Pool in Warner
Robins and participate in
trips beyond the central time
zone, and that’s a couple of
Sun Bowls and a bowl game
in Hawaii in 2000.
Normally, the Bulldogs
make the teams from
California, Oregon, Idaho,
Utah, Colorado and Wyoming
travel to Sanford Stadium. We
certainly don’t venture fur
ther north than Kentucky.
The last time Georgia
played more than two time
zones away from Athens in
the regular season: 1960
against Southern California
in Los Angeles (we lost 10-
3). There’s also record of, in
1957, a trip to Ann Arbor to
play the Michigan Wolverines
(we lost by a shutout).
Here are some fun, if not
useless, facts about Georgia
football you can share with
Tech or Auburn friends. In
their football history, Georgia
has scored a grand total
of 19 points in the state of
California (five total games
including two shutout losses
to USC in the 19305, a tied
game with St. Mary’s in San
Franciscoin 1950 and the 9-0
Rose Bowl win against UCLA
in the 1942 national champi
onship season).
Talk about trips up north,
Georgia once had a string
of nine games in nine sea
sons (1923 to 1931) against
the Yale Bulldogs (yes, our
Bulldog cousins). Eight of
those games were in New
