Hearing aids
The reasons for the resistance
By ANNETTE R.
PEPPARD
Au.D., Audiologist
My friend needs hear
ing aids, but she won’t
even consider going to
get her hearing tested.
Why is she so resistant?
People often misunder
stand hearing loss. The
often-stated issue is: “I can
hear, but I don’t under
stand.”
Hearing loss affects soft
sounds such as the ticking
of clock, the click of a turn
signal, rustling of leaves
and speech sounds. When
someone has hearing loss,
it is easy to ask someone to
repeat or turn the television
up louder or simply pretend
that the understanding was
complete.
Many people choose to
dominate conversations
(they talk all the time so
they don’t have to listen).
Others withdraw and just
say that it doesn’t matter. If
it is important someone will
let them know. Then other
people just bluff or pretend
that they understood, mak
ing for some interesting con
versations.

ASK THE EXPERT
Hearing loss is very per
sonal. It impacts all phases
of life. It is something that
affects relationships both
intimate and casual.
Husbands and wives argue
over whether a statement was
ever made (“I told you that;
why don’t you remember”);
children and parents debate
specifics of arrangements (“I
was telling you about the
kid’s birthday, and now you
tell me that I don’t keep you
informed.”); friends and co
workers notice information
gets confused (“I talked with
you on the phone about this
yesterday.”)
When someone chooses
to wait to get help, all of
the personal-psychological
social parts of life start to
unravel.
So why do people resist
getting help. The reasons
are as myriad as the num
ber of people with hearing
loss. Some people honestly
do not realize that they have
a problem with their hear
ing. The last person to know
is often the person with the
impairment.

Hearing loss in many cases
happens slowly over a long
time. The person gets used
to not understanding or not
hearing the turn signal or
not noticing that the birds
have gotten very far away.
When it is pointed out to
this individual that he/she
is missing conversations,
the response may be “Okay,
where do I go now?”
Another scenario may
be an emotional denial.
These are the people who
say “There’s nothing wrong
with MY hearing; you just
mumble.” Or, “I like my TV
loud. It makes it sound like a
movie theatre!” Sometimes
people have been told by
a physician or others that
hearing loss is part of aging
and there is nothing that
can be done.
Still others know that they
are not hearing well, but
think it doesn’t affect anyone
else. These are the folks who
tell their family members
that “it is no big deal” and
“I can get by a little longer.”
