HHJ history
50 years ago:
Houston County schools, the
county courthouse, city hall and
Perry Manufacturing Company
close their doors “until further
notice” due to a “serious” short
age of natural gas. Churches
and other organizations were
also asked to close their doors,
if possible. Temperatures - lows
- at the time were in the teens.
The situation, according to the
newspaper report, was expected
to last at least a week.
Also, negotiations begin for
right of way along U.S. 341
between Perry and Fort Valley
as part of a major widening and
resurfacing project.
30 years ago:
Word comes down that Lyn
Mar apartments in Warner
Robins, called a “fire hazard” by
the couny’s Building Inspector,
will be “razed" within the next
60 days. In other news, the old
Perry fire bell - reportedly only
recently discovered (under a
water tank) and recovered - is
restored and mounted on display
(no costs reported). It reportedly
weighs 530 pounds and cost
the city S6O to be made back in
1911.
10 years ago:
Houston County gets a wind
fall of $120,000 .to buy new
books for its libraries.
In other news, a 29-year-old
man who escaped from the
Houston County jail is caught
about 24 hours later (hiding in an
abandoned trailer), and another
would-be burglar is caught at
the front door by a pair of Perry
officers on patrol on bicycles.
In a sign of the times (some
thing to bring back memories for
some of us) the Perry Players
group is busy putting on the play
Fiddler on the Roof.
