and bestowed honors and
awards in several other cat
egories recently, including
the prestigious Citizen of the
Year and Chamber Person of
the Year awards.

Gov. Sonny Perdue recent
ly awarded $3.5 million in
grants to seven Georgia
regions committed to becom
ing Work Ready Regions.
These regions, according
to a release, bring together
their assets and leaders to
create regional talent pools
targeting existing strategic
industries and to increase
economic development
opportunities.
“The Work Ready Regions
initiative is being led by
businesses and will link
workforce, education and
economic development to
ensure Georgia’s workforce
is our state’s number one
competitive advantage,”
said Perdue. “This effort
will drive continued growth
and prosperity throughout
the state.”
Locally, the grant, accord
ing to Mary Therese Tebbe,
executive director of the 21st
Century Partnership, repre
sents “months of hard work
on behalf of the 21st Century
Partnership, Aerospace
Innovation Center, Region
Six Economic Development,
the Middle Georgia RDC and
Robins AFB.”

Ready Community status,

ers to complete Work Ready

OBITUARIES
Richard L. Blackstone
PERRY - Richard L.
Blackstone, age 78, passed
away Monday, January 29,2008,
at Coliseum Medical Center
in Macon. Graveside services
were held Thursday, January 31,
2008, at Woodlawn Cemetery.
Mr. Blackstone was born
in Mitchell County to the late
Samuel and Myrtle Hudson
Blackstone, and had lived in
Perry since 1950. A Quality
Control Inspector, he was retired
from Continental Can Company.
Survivors include his beloved
wife of 58 years, Erline
Blackstone, of Perry; children
Leverne Bray and Lewis L.
Blackstone, both of Perry; sis
ters, Anne Sinyard (Wofford) of
Grovania, Delores Hall (Johnny)
of Brunswick, and Louvincia Plair
of Perry; three grandchildren and
two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by
his brothers, Hughie Blackstone
and Kenneth Blackstone.

Rev. Ford Henry
Wilson, Sr. ,
KATHLEEN - Rev. Ford Henry
Wilson, Sr., 86, went home to be
with the Lord on Wednesday,
Jan. 30, 2008. Services will be
at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Bonaire
First Baptist Church with burial in
Bonaire Cemetery. Visitation will
be from 4-7 p.m. Saturday at the
funeral home.
Rev. Wilson was born in
Carroll County, Ga., and reared
in Thomaston, Ga. He was the
son of the late Homer L Wilson
and Sallie Elizabeth (Payne)
Wilson.
He was also preceded in
death by his wife of 54 years,
Anna (Newton) Wilson, two
brothers, Doug and George
Wilson and two sisters, Lois
Cole and Pauline Wood. He was
a graduate of the Robert E. Lee
Institute in Thomaston, Ga., and
Mercer University in Macon. He
served his country proudly in
the United States Army-Air Corp.
Whiie fighting in War World 11,
he became a MIA in France
for the months of June through
August of 1944. Rev. Wilson’s
firffifove was the ministry. He

Highway Chapel in Thomaston,
Ga.; Bonaire Baptist Church
in Bonaire; Blue Springs in
Hawkinsville; Second Memorial
in Perry and Henderson Baptist
in Henderson. At the time of
his death, Rev. Wilson was a
member of Bonaire First Baptist
Church and was retired from
Robins Air Force Base in the
Procurement Division.
Survivors include his son, Ford
(Donna) Wilson, Jr. of Kathleen,
daughters, Jan (Dennis) Powell
of Kathleen, Lisa (Mike) Kelly of
Dudley, Sally (Jimmy) Dumas of
Bonaire, brothers, Murle (Johnnie
Mae) Wilson of Thomaston,
H.C. (Essie) Wilson of Vidalia,
grandchildren, Kimberly (Kevin)
Rainey, Lee (Melissa) Powell,
Allison Wilson, Jacob Wilson,
Alex Kelly, Jon-Ford Kelly,
Melissa Kelly, Patrick Moore,
Sam Dumas, Anna Dumas and
two great grandchildren, Kaylynn
Rainey and Kasen Rainey.

memory of Rev. Wilson.

Robins. Burial will follow in
Parkway Memorial Gardens. Dr.

Jr. and Rev. Marcus Butler will
officiate.
Mr. Smith was born in
Knoxville, Ga., to the late Emmett
and Edith McGhee Smith Merritt
and the widower of Elaine
Gnann Smith. He was a mem
ber of First United Methodist
Church and enjoyed attending
Rock Springs Congregational
Methodist Church. He faithful
ly attended the Indian Springs
Holiness Campground summer
campmeetings for over 50 years
and was currently serving on the
board of directors.
He was a graduate of the
Gupton-Jones College of
Mortuary Science in Nashville,
Tenn., and the Atlanta Law
School. He began his funeral
service career at Hart’s Mortuary
in Macon. He later worked for
GMAC before moving to Warner
Robins to become a partner
in Christopher-Smith Funeral
Home. He later founded Heritage
Memorial Funeral Home where
he worked until his passing. He
was a past-president and of
the Georgia Funeral Director’s
