Oup country's rights are not without pain
Dear Readers, Recently, I
noticed reports about white
supremacists marching in
Jena, Ala., to support the
white victim of the racially
motivated “beat-down.” The
local community did not
want these outsiders using
its pain as a soapbox for
“white power,” yet it hon
ored the Ist Amendment’s
almost, inviolable right to
congregate and protest. In
reading this sad story, my
thoughts turned to an event
from my boyhood: Skokie
and the Nazis.
Skokie, 111., is a middle
class/upper-middle class
town of approximately
65,000 people just Northwest
of Chicago. Back in the mid
-19705, as today, Skokie had
a strong Jewish presence.
At the time, many of its
citizens, maybe as much as
20 percent of its population,
Use stories to communicate your 'sticky' vision
For managers and
leaders, talk is work!
According to Henry
Mintzberg in his book The
Nature of Managerial Work,
talking comprises 78 percent
of what managers actually do
with their time.
“If you can learn to talk
more effectively, you can
become much more produc
tive.” Helping you do that
is Stephen Denning’s objec
tive in his bo<sk The Leader’s
Guide to Storytelling.
Denning acknowledges that
many business leaders are
skeptical about stories. They
know that hard facts are
what drive business thinking,
cutting through myths, gos
sip, and speculation. “Like
most business executives,
I knew that analytical was
good, anecdotal was bad. The
strength of analysis lies in its
objectivity, its impersonality,
Training that new puppy
We have just com
pleted a holiday
season that proba
bly brought us some new gifts.
Many families may have even
received a new furry addition
such as a puppy. Hopefully,
over the last month you and
your puppy are getting along
wonderfully, but too fre
quently these puppies do not
properly assimilate into your
family’s schedule, causing
frustration and sometimes
even conflict.
Are you aware that the
number one reason these
adorable presents are
returned to animal shelters
across the country is due to
unresolved behavioral prob
lems? Some of the more com
mon problems include lack of
house training, inappropri
ate chewing, and antisocial
behaviors.
House training seems to be
the most important part in
forming a healthy relation
ship between you and your
new puppy. There are many
different ways to house train

its heartlessness.”

a weakness. Analysis might

offers a route to the heart.
And that’s where you must go
if you are to motivate people
not only to take action, but to
do so with energy and enthu

a puppy, such as using “potty
pads” or just being very dili
gent about taking frequent
bathroom breaks.
However, through the
years the one method that
has proven to be the most
efficient and effective is crate
training. With crate train
ing, your puppy is confined
to a crate when not under
someone’s direct supervision.
The puppy is taken to a des
ignated area of your yard for
his or her elimination needs
before entering and always
immediately upon exiting
the crate. It is not uncom
mon for puppies to only par
tially empty their bladder
(Nazi). As I recall, his claims
were delusional and, after
his moment of infamy from
1976 to 1978, he became just
a hateful memory.
In the fall of 1976, Collin
applied for a permit to march
in full blackshirt regalia in
a Skokie park. Skokie, and
much of Chicago, recoiled
in angry disbelief. Skokie
leaders quickly passed an
ordinance requiring, among
other things, a bond be post
ed against potential damages
from the march. Litigation
over the constitutional
ity of this ordinance, briefly
reached the United States
Supreme Court in June of
1977. The Court ordered the
march be permitted to go
forward, pending the resolu
tion of this litigation, given
the singular importance of
our Ist Amendment rights.
In constitutional law, there
in the reality of “what is
now.” They cannot envision
what you see so clearly in
your imagination. You want
to inspire them to consider
what’s possible. How do you
do that?
Find an appropriate story.
Chip and Dan Heath, in their
book Made to Stick, suggest
that stories are a powerful
medium for teaching and
inspiring. “Stories are usual
ly concrete. Most have emo
tional and unexpected ele
ments. Make sure your story
is simple, reflecting your core
message.”
After extensive analysis,
the Heath brothers conclude
that most inspirational sto
ries have one of three major
plots: Challenge, Connection,
or Creativity. The type of
story to tell depends on the
objective you want to accom
plish.
and then to have to urinate
again in five or 10 minutes.
Therefore, if you feel incom
plete elimination has taken
place, return your puppy to
his crate, without scolding,
for a short period of time, and
then allow them to try again.
Remember to give your
puppy frequent bathroom
breaks while playing, as often
as every 20 minutes for young
er puppies. Consistency is
the key to house training.
Crate selection is also very
important, so see your veteri
narian or veterinary techni
cian for more information.
Helpful hint: A rule of
thumb is that the number of
hours you can expect a puppy
to hold their urine is the
number of months they are
old plus 1. ( This is only true
while crated and unstimu
lated.) So, if your puppy is 3
months old, you can expect
him to hold his urine for four
hours.

is a distinction between gov

Ist Amendment rights as
they unfold, if you will, and
a “prior restraint” on the
content of Ist Amendment
rights. The latter are viewed
with great skepticism
requiring the highest degree
of proof that governmental
intervention is appropriate,
as opposed to merely ratio

and manner. Thus, there
are regulations on how close
to abortion clinics pro-life
supporters may congregate,
they cannot be absolutely
banned.
In the end, Collin’s group
marched in a Southside
Chicago park, where the
march was not quite as con
troversial, and Skokie citi
zens were spared something
for which the word “hor
rific” does not do justice.
In the Challenge plot, the
main character overcomes
daunting challenges and
succeeds. “Challenge plots
appeal to our perseverance
and courage. They make us
want to work harder, take
on new challenges, and over
come obstacles. They inspire
us to act.”
In the Connection plot,
“people develop a relation
ship that bridges a gap -
racial, class, ethnic, religious,
demographic, or otherwise.
Connection plots make us
want to help others, be more
tolerant of others, work with
others, and love others.”
“The Creativity plot
involves someone making a

Finally, it is important to

Yet, Collin (who was Jewish,
by the way) had won the
right to take his message of
hate directly to Skokie. The
ACLU, which defended his
right to march, lost tens of
thousands of members for
doing so and a movie star
ring Danny Kaye was made
of the whole saga.
The citizens of Skokie were
embittered by the whole
experience. They could not
comprehend how this coun
try could allow, in complic
ity, such a petty and callous
man to lance the wounds left
by Hitler’s genocidal evils.
I am sure the citizens of
Jena share pale echoes of
this resentment. Yet, their
pain is a tribute to our coun
try’s greatest right, the first
right, to publicly gather and
protest. It is one of the prin
cipal distinctions between
our republic and petty dic

If you are telling a story at
the kickoff of a new project,
use a Challenge plot. If you
are conducting a team-build

Thus, the Ist Amendment

Ultimately, we may not like

sometimes permits, but the
alternative would diminish
our freedom.
