Dealing with Abusive Supervisors
Jm
Billy Powell
Columnist
but there are some individuals who by virtue
of their personality makeup are not qualified to
supervise others. I refer to those who abuse,
threaten, and demean their employees. In
my 48-year working career, I have witnessed
some of the worst supervisors imaginable.
One supervisor constantly micromanaged
his staff and found fault in every thing they ’
did. He was fanatical about being on time,
strictly observing lunch and break periods,
and heaven forbid if you punched the time
clock exactly at quitting time. He even
rummaged though everyone’s trashcan after
hours.
I witnessed a bird colonel unmercifully
upbraiding a master sergeant. He was curs
ing loudly and threatening the frightened and
cowering sergeant. Another colonel was
so abrasive to the workers in his organiza
tion that 500 complaint letters were written
to congressmen and senators. A general
fired a civilian briefing him because the man
shrugged his shoulders and said, “I don’t
know,” to a question asked by the general. I
personally saw a general fire a colonel on the
spot because the senior officer used color
coding on his briefing charts that conflicted
with a new regulation on visual aids. The
next morning a moving van was backed up to
the colonel’s house.
I general removed the highest ranking
civilian from his plush, mahogany-lined office
and placed him in a small cubicle with the
regular workforce. This stemmed from an
operational disagreement that had occurred
I SAW GOD WASH THE WORLD
BY: William L. Stidger
I saw God wash the world last night with
his sweet showers on high, and then, when
morning came, I saw Him Hang it out to dry,
He washed each tiny blade of grass and
every trembling tree; He flung his showers
against the hill, and swept the billowing sea.
The white rose is a cleaner white, the red
rose is more red, Since God washed every
fragrant face and put them all to bed.
There’s not a bird, there’s not a bee That
wings along the way But is a cleaner bird and
bee than is was yesterday.
I saw God wash the world last night. Ah,
would he had washed me as clean if all my
dust and dirt As that old white birch tree.

several years before the general became the
civilian’s boss. Although command policy
required the civilian to attend the general’s
staff meetings, he wasn’t allowed to speak.
That same general once unnerved me. I
was writing a speech for him. He suggested
a change. Trying to be helpful, I offered an
even better revision. He menacingly pointed
his finger at me, saying, ‘You disagreed with
me.” He feverishly started punching his
intercom buttons and summoning colonels
to his office. When they arrived, he asked
which version they liked best, his or mine.
Naturally the chauvinists said, “We like yours
general." “See there son,” he snarled. “You
were wrong.” I breathed a sigh of relief to still
be employed.
Some workers need to be disciplined,
some even deserve to be fired, but none
should be talked to in a demeaning manner
or treated with disrespect. Every person
possesses an innate and unalienable dig
nity bestowed by his Creator that must be
respected. To debase and humiliate another
individual is reprehensible to God and will be
recompensed in the course of time. Sadam
Hussein thumbed his nose at the world when
he wantonly maimed, mutilated, and killed his
countrymen, but he couldn’t escape God’s
wrath. It came at the end of a noose. I am
thankful that in my five decades in the work
force, I have never mistreated a subordinate,
for God promises that those who wantonly
mistreat others will pay dearly either in this
life or the next. “Vengeance is mine,” sayeth
the Lord.
Flee abusive supervisors as quickly as
possible. Transfer or find another job. Don't
let oppressive supervisors affect your attitude
because the quality of your workmanship
will suffer and you will fall into the trap of
becoming a substandard worker. Instead,
“Whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the
Lord, and not unto men.” (Colossians 3:23).

ALL WOMEN INVITED TO ATTEND THIS
EVENING OF BIBLE TEACHING AND
FELLOWSHIP.
Sponsored by Warner Robins Aglow

Mabelle Kindle
Mabelle was bom and raised in the Air
Force. Her father retired in 1964 and the
family moved back to Warner Robins where
she has lived since that time. She met and
married Keith in 1979 while he was stationed
at Robins AFB. Keith retired from the Air
Force in 1986.
God blessed and changed their lives when
their only child, Amanda, was born in 1980
with severe mental retardation and physical
disabilities. Keith and Mabelle agree that
through Amanda’s life, God has strength
ened not only their marriage, but their rela
tionship with Him in an awesome way over
the last 29 years. They can truly say with the
Psalmist: “Who is like you oh God?”
Mabelle has served our Lord Jesus at
Robins AFB Chapel for 32 years as Sunday
school, VBS, and adult Bible study teacher.

Reflections
“dig” into the basket of delicious fruit, the
hesitant lad stood quietly beside his mother.
“Don’t you like cherries?” the grocer
asked. “ Yes,” the lad replied.
Later, the puzzled mother asked the
son why he had not taken the cherries when
the offer was first made. “’Cause his had is
bigger than mine,” the lad truthfully admitted.
A touch of humor in the incident
generates a smile, or perhaps a chuckle as
the scene is envisioned. But, there’s another
side to the story. The lad could have helped
himself and gone his merry way with a small
handful of cherries. His motive could be
thought as greed. Or, perhaps he was moti
vated by wisdom and patience. The lad was
wise enough to realize the grocer would give
him more than he could have gotten on his
own. He was patient and trusting enough to
wait for a more generous serving from the

So it is as we receive gifts from God.
We can grab a little handful for ourselves
and be on our way. Or, we can patiently wait,
trusting God for the generous servings he will
give directly.
“The Lord is good to those who wait
for Him.” (Lamentations 3:25) If we give him
time, He will surely fulfill our every need.
