The search for a full-time head foot
ball coach and athletic director for
Houston County High School is down
to four candidates. Those four took an
opportunity to address Bears players,
parents, coaches and other supporters
at the school’s theater Tuesday.
George Collins, who served as inter
im head coach at Houston County
High for the 2007 season, is one of
the candidates along with current
Perry High School offensive coordina
tor Chad Alligood. The other two can

The Houston County
High basketball squads
suffered setbacks during a
dreary road trip to Coffee
County High - which hap
pens to be the sight of this
year’s Region 1-AAAAA
tournaments - in Douglas
Tuesday. The home Trojans
swept the Bears in the dou
bleheader, which put both
the Houston County teams
at 3-6 and sixth place in
the league standings.
In boys action, Coffee
won 63-49 following a 13-
point halftime lead. For the
Bears, Jarrid Nunn had 12
points.
The Houston Lady
Bears were riding a three
game winning streak into
Douglas, but the Coffee
County girls took care of
that in a 56-35 final. Tonia
Williams had 10 points.
The Perry High basket
ball Panthers may not have
registered an impressive
point total Tuesday at the
home of archrival Peach
County High, but it was

The' candidates spoke about their

their vision for the Houston athletic

Collins grew up in Bonaire, played
at Warner Robins High School
and became an All-Southeastern

under Vince Dooley at the University

to Geoiyia to coach high school ball,
starting as head coach at Perry High.

best opportunity to work with young
people as you are around them all the

As a coach, Collins said he believes
in doing things the right way instead
of taking shortcuts, doing what’s best
for the players and continuing to work
hard.
“It’s a great game,” he said. “It’s
about the players.

to play a hard-core defense.

Demons
upset lift
County
Girls fall in OT
By DON MONCRIEF
Journal Managing Editor
There were upsets Tuesday
night at Warner Robins. For
the boys, the Demons upset
Tift County,
which
entered the
night 6-1
in Region
1-AAAAA
Warner
Robins’
boys
improved
to 4-4 as
a result of
the win.
That final was 49-48 for the
Demons.
Warner Robins’ girls, how
ever, were upset because
despite forcing the game into
overtime, they fell 63-60.
In their game, it was pretty
much a battle from start to
finish. The Lady Blue Devils
led all of the first quarter,
although never more than
by five, 14-9, and that was in
the closing minute. Besides,
Quinshay Williams’ 3-point
er just before the buzzer cut
it to 14-12.
The Demonettes contin
ued to chip away at that and
finally took a lead of their
own just past the midway
point of the second quar
ter. Deanna LeShoure, who
finished with 14, did those
honors after being fouled
outside the arch. She made
two-of-three to put Warner
Robins up 21-20. It led at
the half 26-23.
Then, it kept that momen
tum up through the whole of
the third quarter - its big
gest lead six, 35-29, and that
also midway through.

Metro meet
HoCo boys swim to
fourth-place finish
Special to the Journal
Warner Robins and
Houston County High
school’s girls and boys swim
teams competed at the Metro
Atlanta Meet at Westminster
this past weekend. For
Warner Robins’ girls, that
meant a milestone. They
surpassed 100 wins (105-
24), while competing against
50 other teams (no overall
team results were provided).
According to Warner Robins
Coach Barbara Hawkins,
92 competitors from the 50
teams went into prelims
along with Demonette senior
Anne Culpepper in the 200
Free individual event.
“Anne was ranked sixth
prior to the prelims,” she
said, “but swam a time to
be seeded third for the final
heats. Anne who swims
year round with Premier
Aquatics is accustomed to
managing the pressure of a
major meet. She placed sec
ond behind Sheila O’Neill
from Marist and dropped
three seconds while beating
junior Emily Kintz from St.
Pious X.”
Culpepper also competed
in the 500 free where she
was seeded fourth for those
prelims. She maintained
