HHJ history
50 years ago:
A 15-year-old Houston County
boy is arrested for killing a 16-
year-old Montezuma boy with a
shotgun. The boy charged with
the murder is a Perry High School
student, described by classmates
in the newspaper article as “quiet
and well-behaved." The inci
dent, according to the newspa
per report, occurred when three
Houston County teens, including
the one charged, were walking
along a road near Lake Joy when
a car bearing six Montezuma boys,
including the victim, drove up and
a “discussion of some guns in pos
session of both groups ensued."
The accused boys reportedly
admitted to the shooting saying he
was afraid of what the victim might
do to him. The teen was to be tried
as an adult.

The Perry City Council votes to
“leave it like it is,” in regard to a
push to repaint the lines on Carroll
Street in a way that would expand
parking accomodations. Also, the
Community Relations Service
Division, U.S. Department of
Justice rules that Houston County
high school bands can continue
to play “Dixie” at football games
and elsewhere. The decision
stems from a letter to the board
of education from the Community
Action Group alleging civil rights
violations. To that end, School
Superintendent David Perdue was
directed to file a response to the
complaint. He did, reportedly more
than 50 pages worth, and resulting
in the ruling.

And now for a little deja vu
... County officials cruise city
streets for damage after a strong
storm system moves through the
area over the weekend. Reports
handled by emergency person
nel include some flooding and a
funnel cloud is reportedly spotted
in a field just south of Perry. In
other news, Perry High School’s
Panthers beat South Forsyth to
secure a berth in the GHSA AAA
basketball finals.

What happens when a
group of ministers gets
together? In the case of
the Perry Ministerial
Association, friendship
. and laughter, kidding
around about who will be
late, and finally some very
serious talk about reach

Steve Schave, pastor
of the fledgling Christ
Lutheran Church, is this

he’s hoping to build the
organization and extend
its outreach as the Perry
