HHJ history
50 years ago:
The Georgia State Society ot
Colonial Dames meets in Perry.
The group ot ladies - you prob
ably figured that - specializes in
Colonial history and was on hand
to present its annual awards.
Also, Chapman-Beatty Tractor
Company in Perry receives the
first U.S. made diesel tractor pro
duced by the Ford Motor Company
(presumably the first shipment and
not the first off the assembly line).
(Note: It was apparently a slow
news week.)
30 years ago:
The Perry City Council decides
it will not pay twice what the city
was normally charged for natural
gas to cope with continuing cold
weather - the price apparently
doubled b the supplier. Instead,
the Perry City Council votes that if
it comes down to it - the cold snap
continues - they would curtail the
gas supply for category two users,
which included industry, manufac
turers and small businesses.
Also, Houston County com
missioners voted to approve an
amendment to allow go-kart type
miniature auto racing tracks to be
built. That is only if a slew of con
ditions - days and times of opera
tions, distances from residential
structures, et cetera - were met.
10 years ago:
Perry's boys basketball team
makes it to the Final Four for the
first time since 1985 with 66-54
win over Greene-Taliaferro (the
same team that eliminated them
the year prior).
Also a man is arrested for stab
bing another man to death after an
argument breaks out at a barbecue
and the Airport Authority renames
the road the Perry-Houston County
airport is on from 500 Airport Road
to Myrtle Field Road, and assigns
location numbers to buildings and
hangars. The move is reportedly
done to aid emergency personnel
avoid confusion resulting from its
previous name/designation.
