"Where neighbors meet"
HHJ history
50 years ago:
A new gymnasium for Perry High
School begins going up. It has a
price tag of $125,000. Also, Perry
mayor Stanley E. Smith Jr., reacts
to reports Perry is in a recession
with: “What recession?"
Smith will go so tar as to say
collections have been “slower"
but adds that is because of poor
weather, which he says has practi
cally stopped construction work of
all kinds.
30 years ago:
Plans for a 540 seat Ampitheater
for Perry are unveiled. The design
originates from University of
Georgia students and is to be con
structed off Highway 341 north. A
price tag is reportedly still to be
determined.
Also, Mayor James McKinley
casts himself in the role of "peace
maker” to end friction between the
city and the Perry Area Chamber
of Commerce. The article does
' not elaborate on why the two are
at odds, only that it has reached
the point where members of the
city council were seeking a refer
endum on the question of whether
the city would continue to provide
support for the chamber.
10 years ago:
Police hunt for a male in a
Halloween mask who reportedly
robbed the Red Gable Inn at gun
point. Also, a Perry High School
student is charged for making a
bomb threat.
In addition, two mergers make
the news. The first is between
Medusa, with a plant located at
Clinchfield, and Southdown of
Texas. The other, which had gone
to federal court for a determination
if it woud go through or not, was
between Lockheed Martin and
Northrup Gruman, the results of
which would affect the facilities in
both Warner Robins and Perry.
And, the Public Service
Commission approves toll-free
calls to Macon.
