"Where neighbors meet”
HHJ history
50 years ago:
Lawrence Hunt, who was then
clerk of the Houston County
Commissioners, was announced
as Perry's new postmaster. The
appointment approval came via
President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
Hunt was to succeed Cullen
Talton, who had been acting post
master for the past two years.
Also, Perry football coach Herb
St. John reportedly might try his
hand at coaching golf. Not really
but he did hit a hole in one at
Perry Country Club - hole No. 9.
His quote when asked whether
he made the ace: “Uh huh."
30 years ago:
A cat burglar - “the mysteri
ous cat burglar", according to
the newspaper article - was
nabbed by police after he made
a “daring” rooftop entry into three
stores the week prior. The man
was charged with six counts of
burglary. He reportedly entered
each of the establishments by
going up on the roof and break
ing into a second-floor window.
According to the article, how
ever, he only made off with S2OO
at one location. The others he
came away empty handed.
Also, a man pulled a pistol on
the owner at the Squire Package
Store and made off with S9OO.
Police hunted him for reportedly
four hours with bloodhounds, but
at the time of this writing, he had
not been caught. And in other
news, a man was charged for
the hit-and-run of an 18-year
old. The 18-year-old’s sister was
a witness to the accident. There
was no word on the victim’s
health.
10 years ago:
Perry High School students,
reportedly for the first time ever,
won the Region Championship in
the annual Georgia mathematics
league competition. Perry edged
out Albany 113-112.
Also, officials announced the
annual Military Ball would not
be coming to Perry. Georgia
National Fairgrounds officials
had lobbied to have it on a rotat
ing basis - here and Macon - but
were turned down.

Books pouring in for old book solo
By CHARLOTTE PERKINS
Journal Staff Writer
Do you have more books than shelf
space? Do you have paperback mysteries'
collecting dust? Do you have cookbooks
you never use? Do you have bestselling
novels from last year and the year before
that someone else might enjoy?
If you answered yes to one or more of
the above, you’re not alone.
More than 1,600 boxes of books have
already been donated to the Friends of the
Library book sale, according to Christine
Hoskins, who is this year’s president, and
the group is hoping for more.
Book lovers get to stock up on good
reading at bargain prices, and all pro
ceeds go to support Houston County’s
libraries.
