Vatican honors
Father Rem
Sacred Heart pastor given
title of Monsignor
Father Fred Nijem the long time Pastor
at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Warner
Robins has a new title...’’Monsignor”.
Nijem got the call April 23rd from the
Most Reverend Bishop Kevin Boland of the
Diocese of Savannah who nominated him
for the honor.
“I was quite surprised” Nyem told his
parishioners at mass over the weekend. He
read a formal letter from the Bishop to the
congregation stating the title is granted to
him “immediately”.
A ceremony at the Cathedral of John the
Baptist in Savannah will take place in the
near future. Nijem who has been pastor at
Sacred Heart for 16 years will celebrate his
40th anniversary in the priesthood May
25th at a special mass at Sacred Heart.
Monsignor Nijem said he accepted the title
on behalf of the Sacred Heart Parishioners
who could share in the honor.

Understanding The Lord's Prayer
(The conclusion of five parts)
Our Father which art in
heaven, Hallowed be thy
name. Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done in earth, as
it is in heaven. Give us this
day our daily bread. And for
give us our debts, a we forgive
our debtors.
Lead us not into temptation
- On an inspirational calen
dar, a scripture verse from
Psalm 12:7, NIY says “The
Lord will keep you from all
harm. He will watch over your life.”
That promise is followed by the quota
tion, “Can we be unsafe where God has
placed us, and where He watches over
us as a parent of a child that He loves?”
(Fenelon)
But deliver us from evil - From
the same calendar, “Hold on to the
good, Avoid every kind of evil.” (I
Thessalonians 5:21, 22, NIV), and the
quotation, “The soul is stronger that
trusts in goodness.” (Phillip Massinger)
For Thine is the Kingdom - “The king
dom of God is within you” (Luke 17:21).

Thoughts on that 3 a.m.
call to the White House
During the recent dem
ocratic priniaries, presi
dential contender Hillary
Clinton purposely mugged
for a shot on national tele
vision drinking a boiler
maker in a Benton, Indiana
pub. A boilermaker is an
extremely potent combina
tion. It comprises a jigger
of strong whiskey, tequila, or vodka
guzzled down with a glass of beer—
the intent to aggrandize the effects of
alcohol. Ironically, days earlier, Senator
Clinton ran a television advertisement
declaring that she was the best qualified
candidate to answer a 3 a.m. call to the
White House. When I saw her quaff
ing down the boilermaker, the thought
came to me that I would hate to have
her or any President respond to a 3 a.m.
phone call involving national security
after consuming several boilermakers
the night before. Personally, I doubt if
Senator Clinton is a drinker, but sus
pect her intentions were to show her
Midwestern roots by participating in
regional drinking customs. I did notice,
however, that she didn’t grimace like
Uncle Walter (no kinship) when she
downed the potent elixir. Uncle Walter
would purchase two quarts of liquor on
the third of every month when his social
security check arrived. When Uncle
Walter downed his first drink, his face
would flush red. He would look like he
was dying. Later, he would pat his stom
ach and say with a forced smile, “That
was so good.”

reason deacons must slip
in and out of liquor stores without
detection. I don’t drink, but if you saw
me sitting around bars and frequent
ing liquor stores, you wouldn’t read
my articles. When I was quite young,
I witnessed three priests drinking on a
Saturday night at a Macon restaurant
where customers were allowed to bring
their own bottle. Knowing that he who
hoots with the owls don’t soar with
the eagles, I wondered if the priests
would feel physically and spiritually fit
to conduct mass the next morning. At
UGA football games, I frequently pass
fraternity houses on my way to Sanford
Stadium. On the front lawns of frat
houses will be parents tailgating with
their sons. Both parent and sibling will
be imbibing the spirits. This is not set
ting a good example for young people.
If one must drink, it is best to do it
in moderation and not in the public eye,
especially in the presence of impression
able young people. I remember a Macon
doctor who advocated that his patients
drink “one” jigger of a top brand whisky
every night for medicinal purposes. The
problem is: who can stop at only one
jigger?
