Keeping promises: Grandmother, granddaughter graduate together
By JANET H. KELLY
Middle Georgia Technical College
June 12 represented a life
changing moment for two
people in Middle Georgia.
One, a grandmother who
worked her way up the cor
porate ladder to a success
ful career and the other, a
granddaughter, dedicated to
providing a better life not
only for her children, but also
for underprivileged and less
fortunate children.
Together, they walked
down the aisle at the Middle
Georgia Technical College
commencement exercises to
fulfill their dream of receiv
ing their GED.
The story begins in 1962
when Patsy J. Paulk dropped
out of high school in Albany
and gave birth to her first
child that same year. On

If I had a Hammer
Shown here with toolboxes are Linda Clements, left, Third
District President of Georgia Federation of Woman’s Clubs
and Nicole Rosser of the Salvation Army Safe House.
The Third District Woman’s club furnished 20 toolboxes
to the Safe House, collecting the boxes and filling them
with hammers, pliers, screwdrivers, rulers, bandanas and
more. These are items that the women may need in set
ting up housekeeping after they leave the Safe House. The
Warner Robins Woman’s Club has been donating items to
the Safe House for many years. The club meets the sec
ond Thursday of each month. For more information on this
organization, contact Linda Clements at 988-4757.
getting married, she made
a promise to her father that
she would get her GED.
However, life intervened over
the next 11 years and with
four children, Patsy found it
next to impossible to fulfill
that promise.
She began to work odd jobs
that did not require a high
school diploma and painted
houses with her father and
brother part time. Then, in
1980, her first husband went
missing in the Atlantic Ocean
and was eventually declared
dead. Patsy was now in a
tough spot - with very little
work experience and no high
school diploma, she now had
to raise four children rang
ing in age from seven to 17
alone.
She began working full time
painting houses and even-
sion to follow about favorite
female heroines in fiction of
all types.
The group will ‘vote on
a name and will also dis
cuss how to organize for the
future. A blog has been set
up for those of the group
who want to use it for chat
ting about books.
No dues will be requested.
Coffee and goodies will be
served. Dress is “whatever
you wear on Saturday morn
ing.”.
If you want to be a charter
member of this still unnamed
group, or just come to cheek it
out, get in touch with Emily
Johnstone at emilys9@alltel.
