THE THYROID COULD BE THE CULPRIT OF LOW ENERGY LEVELS
By Candace Vaughn, M.D.
TIRED AND GAINING WEIGHT?
Are you experiencing low energy? Do
you feel like taking a nap at the end of
a routine day? These symptoms could
well be caused by and underlying undi
agnosed Underactive Thyroid disorder.
The thyroid is a butterfly shaped gland
that is located at the front of your neck.
The Thyroid controls your body's me
tabolism or how your body consumes
energy. This master gland is present in
both males and females and controls
many different body regulatory mecha
nisms. For example, an underactive thy
roid condition (or Hypothyroidism) can
produce widely varied symptoms such
as memory loss, changes in hair and skin

texture, cold tolerance, fatigue, weight
gain, and/or constipation. Often times
these symptoms start gradually and do
not become noticeable to the patient un
til a friend or relative comments on the
change in energy or until the person at
tempts to lose weight unsuccessfully
through diet and exercise. Women and
people with a family history of thyroid
problems are at increased risk of having
this condition.
HOW DO I GET IT CHECKED?
A simple visit to your primary care
provider for a history and physical exam
is the place to start. Most physicians are
interested in knowing your own suspi
cions-since you know your own body
best and are willing to discuss these

concerns with you. During the exam,
your doctor will likely palpate or touch
your thyroid gland to make sure it is not
enlarged or asymmetrical. In the case of
Underactive Thyroid disorders, a sim
ple blood test (usually sent to a hospital
or reference lab) is all that is required to
determine your thyroid function. The
results are typically available within a
few days. Occasionally, further blood
work has to be done, this should be de
termined by your doctor based on the
results of your preliminary tests.
HOW IS UNDERACTIVE
(HYPOTHYROIDISM) TREATED?
The nice thing about Underactive
Thyroid is that it is easily and simply
treated by taking daily oral synthetic re

placement thyroid hormone. Your levels
should be monitored regularly by your
doctor until stabilized and then only
periodically thereafter. Most of the time
the condition requires lifetime hormone
replacement. The synthetic versions of
thyroid hormone are much better and
safer than the older animal based prod
ucts. With the synthetic hormone your
are assured that the same amount of hor
mone is in each pill. The animal versions
come mostly from lamb thyroid glands
which are ground and made into pow
der form leaving no way to know ex
actly how much hormone is in each little
pill. Once the correct levels are achieved,
your sense of well-being should return
within weeks leaving you able to lead a
normal, healthy, and long life.
