Problems With Your Feet And Toes
By Dr. Sarvepalli

Foot and Ankle Center
Podiatric medicine focuses
on diagnosing, treating, and
preventing foot and ankle
problems, such as plantar fas
ciitis. Your podiatric physician
(podiatrist) is highly trained
through years of study and
clinical practice, including a
bachelor's degree program
and four years of podiatric
medical school. In addition,
podiatrists often have one or
more years of residency train
ing to study foot care and sur
gery in greater depth. Once in
practice, podiatrists continue
to stay informed about the
latest research and develop
ments in the field.

Your little toes help to balance and
propel your body when you move. As
your foot flattens, the little toes bend to
grip the ground. Then they straighten,
acting like levers to help push your foot
so you can walk, run, or dance. But if
the front of your foot is wide, you may
develop a problem known as a ham
mer toe. Hammer toes are little toes that
buckle or curl under. Over time, these
toes may hurt and make movement
more difficult. But you don't have to
live with pain. With your doctor's help,
even severe hammer toes can usually be
treated so you can move more easily.
Your big toe is the hardest-working
toe. Every time your foot pushes off the
ground, this toe supports most of your
body's weight. Because the big toe is so
critical to movement, any problem with
it can make walking or even standing
painful. A bunion (excess or misaligned
bone in the joint) is one of the most com
mon big toe problems. In addition to

4 Q: Will hearing aids really improve
the quality of my life?

it harder to find shoes that fit. But you
don't have to hobble for the rest of your

doctor's help, your feet can feel and
look better.

sonalized care I provide them in manag
ing their hearing loss. I believe that has
improved the quality of their life. 'The
largest study of its kind ever conducted
by the National Council on Aging found
that ignoring a hearing loss can lead to
depression in one's life as compared to
those who took action and purchased
hearing aids. I believe hearing well does
improve your quality of life.
Q: Why should you buy hearing aids from
an Audiologist?
A: Many consumers are still uncer
tain where to find professional help for
their hearing problems. Recent reports
showing low consumer satisfaction are
further evidence that selling has often
taken precedence over care and service
in the dispensing and fitting of hearing
aids. That's why you should purchase
hearing aids from an audiologist. Clini
cal audiologists are the hearing care pro
fessionals. They are required to hold a

Q: Over the past several years I have no
ticed that my mother-in-law is having in
creasing difficulty at family gatherings. Do
you have any suggestions that might moti
vate her to correct this problem ?
A: Some people are reluctant to admit
to their hearing loss, as they fear noth
ing can be done, or have heard of some
one who was unsuccessful with hearing
aids. Encourage your mother-in-law
to make an appointment with an audi
ologist. I strongly believe people should
not embark on hearing correction with
out knowing what they are getting into.
At this appointment the audiologist will
obtain a baseline test, discuss the impli
cations of any existing hearing loss, and
present the alternatives available to cor-
