Some Thomson Middle parents contacted to sanest TB test for children
Special to the Journal
North Central Health
District, according .to a
release, has contacted some
Thomson Middle School
parents to encourage them
to have their child tested
for Tuberculosis as a health
precaution. A classmate was
diagnosed with TB after
school was dismissed for
the summer. Although it is
unlikely that the child is con
tagious, the release reads, a
small amount of risk exists
and individuals with extend
ed exposure to this student
should be screened with a
TB skin test.
The NCHD, according to
the release, worked with the
child, the Houston County
Health Department and the
Houston County Board of
Education to compile a list
of anyone who may have
had prolonged contact with
this student. A letter was
mailed to parents of close
contacts, to include friends,
classmates, teachers, those
who rode the same bus or
participated in extracurricu
lar activities. Those who do
not receive the letter are
considered a non-close con
tact; thus there is no need

Natural gas is a colorless, odorless fuel. For safety reasons a
chemical odorant sometimes described as a “rotten egg” smell
is added, making the presence of gas detectable.
If you smell natural gas follow
these simple instructions:
• Leave the area immediately.
• Do not use any electrical appliances
• Do not use a cellular phone.
• Use a neighbor’s phone to call your
City Utilities Provider to report the
situation.

for TB screening.
Dr. David Harvey, District
Health Director for the
NCHD, said, “TB does not
spread easily to others and
requires extended exposure
with an infected individu
al. After speaking with the
child’s physicians, I believe
it is unlikely that this stu
dent is contagious. However,
because a small amount
of risk exists, the Health
Department and Board of
Education urge the recipi
ents of the letter to have
their child screened as a pre
caution.”
Superintendent of Schools
David Carpenter said, “We
are working with the Health
Department to help however
we can to ensure the health
and well-being of all involved.
