Reading Is Fundamental Celebrity
Read Aug. 29.

The Pride of The Crossroads Marching Panther Band: The ship takes the field

A ton of work went into
The Pride of The Crossroads
Marching Panther Band’s
new halftime show for
this year’s football season,
Pirates of The Caribbean.
The Perry High School
Marching Band, which is
directed by Andy Hursey
and assisted by Catheryn
Shaw, shall dazzle audiences
around the state of Georgia
this exciting football season.
The color guard, instructed
by Krystal Riner, is a group
of skilled young women who
twirl their flags and fake
guns with style.

Kindergarten students at David A. Perdue Primary School recently celebrated Grandparent’s Day in a grand way with a program of songs followed by refreshments for their
guests. Many grandparents were in attendance for this annual event. The attached photos show some of the students enjoying the day with their grandparents. Note: More

“Celebrity Reader,” who shared
folk tales, historical fiction, adven
ture tales and a variety of fantastic
literature.
“These wonderful volunteers,”
the release reads, from this
national organization returned to
Parkwood Sept. 3 to present each
and every student with something
The percussion, led by
Mike Herak, continues to
amaze audiences with their
skillful drumming. The per
cussion who do not march,
instead they stay on the
sideline, are very skillful
and coordinated.
All these separate parts of
the band are integral to the
band as a whole. These seg
ments of sound must come
together to create amazing
music.
The music pieces for the
show include The Medallion
Calls, a song to get adrena
line pumping and feet tap
ping, The Black Pearl, a song
to release all the adrenaline
that the previous song built
Grandparent’s Day
extraordinary - a book of their
choosing.
As one stydent exclaimed to his
friend, “This is my very own book
to keep forever and ever. I’m going
to start reading right now!”
The students are looking for

Day, featuring a flute solo
by the woodwind captain,
Reading Is Fundamental, Inc.
is the nation’s oldest and larg
est non-profit children’s literacy
organization. Its purpose is to
help young people discover the
joy and acquire the habit of read
ing. RIF supports literacy devel
opment by providing free books
for children to choose and keep,
as well as encouraging them to

Emma Cutchen, and a brass
choir, which includes various
brass instrument players.
The third song leads up
to the climax piece of the
show, The Rraken. This
music piece is designed to
make audiences imagine the
impending danger of the
Kraken as it comes from
the depths to destroy their
ship. The final song, Davy
Jones, is a fast-moving song
designed to be a heart stop
ping finish to this exciting
show.
When Davy Jones, Will
Turner, Jack Sparrow, and
Elizabeth Swan take the
field in the first song, it
begins a drama act, a kind

At the beginning of the sec
ond song, The Black Pearl,
the band forms a pulsing
heart, with other band mem
bers coming down the cen
ter. During this time, Davy
Jones and a color guard
member, Courtney Chikas,
meet in the middle of the
heart.
Chikas pushes him away
and he clutches his heart,
leading to the breaking of
the heart the marching band
members make.
Actors and the band
respond to each other, it is
really a sight to see.

tion, Margaret Craig McNamara
founded RIF in 1966 after discov
ering that the children she vol
unteered to tutor in Washington,
D.C., owned no or few books. The
Warner Robins chapter has been
putting books into the hands of
children since 1973.

interviewed, Hursey said, “I
have no worries about our
show.”
Hursey teaches band
well, but it is not him that
directs this band. The drum
majors, Allie Jansen and
Josh Rogers, will take the
field with the band again
Friday night and dazzle not
only the Perry supporters,
but the Peach County fans
as well.

County students to talk about
Houston County schools -
their schools; issues, events
and more.
