Setting high goals pays off tar Westfield graduate Brittany Cassell
What I love most
about having
taught school in
a small town is that I can
keep track of my former stu
dents. From colleges, jobs
and accomplishments, I love
to hear it all.
Monday, I saw a very good
friend of mine, Jeanie Cassell.
Her daughter Brittany, was
in the first seventh grade
History class I taught at
Westfield. Having taught
Brittany, I wasn’t the least
bit surprised to hear what
all she has accomplished at
the University of Georgia.
Most seventh graders don’t
have a list of goals mapping
out their future. I certainly
didn’t. My only goal in sev
enth grade was to pass Coach
Marvin Arington’s math
class. Not so for Brittany, in
the seventh grade she began
mapping out her “master
list of goals” and she has
never stopped.
Brittany graduated from
the Westfield School in 2006
as Salutatorian and STAR
student. She was accepted
into the Honors Program at
the University of Georgia
as a Freshman. Now in her
Junior year, with a 3.97
grade point average, she is
pursuing a double major
How to protect your PC investment
Each week I will share
information about
computer technol
ogy, primarily the personal
computer or PC, but I will
also touch on The Internet,
Wireless Networking and
some gaming hints.
I got my first computer
many, many years ago, a
Compaq with 1 MB of Ram
and 2MB hard drive and at
the time it was the top of
the line. I fell in love with
it spending many a night
just playing to see why it
did what it did and what it
looked like inside.
I remember changing the
RAM to 2MB and it was
screaming! Personal comput
ers have come a long way
since then but in a lot of
ways nothing has changed.
It still performs the same
functions input, processing,
output and storage.
This week I will talk about
how to protect your invest
ment. The most destructive
element to your computer
is not peanut and jelly in
the keys but electricity. An
electrical surge can damage
and/or ruin your comput
er to the point it would be
worth more as a bookend.
In the following weeks I will
tell you about each part of
the computer and how they
work i.e., motherboard, CPU,
BIOS/CMOS, network card,
etc.
The most important com
ponent of a computer’s elec
trical system is the power

down against.
The optimum would be to clean it up, maybe
even make it into a park-type area.

supply. The power supply
does not actually generate
electricity, but converts the
115-volt AC power received
from a standard power outlet
and converts it to 12-volt,
5-volt and 3.3-volt DC volt
age that the computer can
handle. In addition to provid
ing power for the computer,
the power supply runs a fan
directly from the electrical
outlet voltage to help cool the
inside of the computer case.
When a computer is running,
this fan and the spinning of
the hard drive and CD-ROM
drive are the primary noise
makers.
One of the best investments
you can make to protect your
computer is a surge suppres
sor. In a perfect world power
companies would supply elec
tricity in smooth, continuous
flows with no dips or spikes
in pressure.
Unfortunately, no matter
how clean the AC supply
appears to be, the truth is
that voltage from the power
company tends to drop (sag)
or shoot (surge or spike) well
above the standard 115 Y

which is standard in the U.S.
Surges and spikes are much
more damaging to your PC
than sags, so get a good qual
ity surge suppressor. Make
sure your suppressor has the
Underwriters Laboratories
UL 1449 for 330 V rating
to ensure substantial protec
tion.
Additionally, check the
joules rating before buying a
new surge suppressor. A joule
is a unit of electrical energy.
Joules are used to describe
how much a surge suppressor
should rate before it fails.
Most authorities agree your
surge suppressor should rate
at a minimum of 800 joules,
the more joules the better.
Also, don’t forget that surg
es also come from telephone
and cable connections. If you
use a modem, DSL or cable
modem, make sure the surge
suppressor includes support
for those devices. Finally,
quality surge suppressors
offer a guarantee of upwards
to $75,000 in protection if
their surge suppressor does
not protect your equipment.
So don’t be one of those
people who spend lots of
money on a computer then
suddenly get cheap on the
protection.
One strong surge of elec
tricity from those good ole
Southern thunderstorms is
all it will take and your hard
earned money spent on that
new computer will be down
the drain.
This reminds me; if you
