Tuesday at 9 a.m. when
the Houston County
Commissioners meet at
the courthouse in Perry
will be the second and
final public hearing on
the countywide warning
system.
Two people spoke at
the meeting last month,
Walton Wood and Dave
Wittenberg. Both were in
favor of the system, but
with some reservations
(as already reported on).
County Commission
Chairman Ned Sanders
and Commissioner Larry
Thomson told Vision 2020
at its last meeting that
from what they had heard
most people would vote
for it on Nov. 4.
That feedback was
solicited by Centerville
Mayor Bubba Edwards
who offered from his end:
“Oddly enough,” he said,
“I’ve heard some people
who are not for it.
“And their reasons
are what I consider to
be invalid because what
they’re thinking about is
the sirens of old versus
how these are done today
... Which each one is indi
vidual, stand-alone. And
the old problems with the
old Warner Robins siren
system.
“So they’re kind of
looking at old technology
instead of new tech. So
that’s what we’ve got to
get out to them.”
Sanders added they’re
also concerned about cov
erage but said: “I don’t

It was one more sign that times are changing.
Chief George Potter of the Perry
Public Safety Department has
already had an energy-efficient
hybrid SUV to check out, and the
other afternoon, he and others in
the department tried out some
thing even more energy efficient
- a Personal Mobility Vehicle that
operates on three wheels with a big
rechargeable battery.
The sales representatives from Interceptor Public Safety
Products didn’t seem to want these highly maneuverable
vehicles called “scooters,” but to most people, that’s what
they are - the big difference being that they’ll go up to 25
miles per hour on clean electrical power at a cost efficiency
comparable to getting 500 miles per gallon of gasoline.
The Personal Mobility Vehicles are operated by one stand
ing driver, but have room for plenty of gear.

Regardless, a decision has to be
