Saturday. Unfortunately,
one of those was a home run
in the top of the seventh.
“We left nine in scoring
position,” said Head Coach
Mitch Horton. “We had the
bases loaded twice with one
out and just couldn’t get the
hit to score runs.”
Standouts Saturday for the
Lady Eagles, in addition to
Purvis, were Cady Mcßight.
She hit a three-run home
run in that Colquitt win.
Also, Miya Rainer, who nor
mally comes off the bench,
had three hits. # And, Mary
Evans stood out defensively,
Horton said.
THURSDAY WRAP
Rain. Rain. Lightning.
And more rain.
As much as Region 1-
AAAAA wanted to get its
softball championship for
2008 decided by Thursday,
all those elements and more
called for a new plan. First
it was lightning, and then
it was rain. When it stopped
and the park’s officials
worked and worked to get
the fields in playing shape,
the rain picked up again, so
everyone packed up and left
again.
What was decided was the
four teams that will represent
the league in the upcoming
GHSA Class AAAAA south
sectionals. Lowndes High,
the region’s top seed, and
third-place Houston County
High went 2-0 on Tuesday at
the Youth Sports Complex in
Cordele.
Northside High defeated
Colquitt County High but
lost to Lowndes while the
Packers of Moultrie, after
the loss to the Eagles on
Tuesday, swept past Coffee
County and Valdosta in the
losers’ bracket. Northside,
on Wednesday before
inclement weather took over
the tournament, defeated
Warner Robins High, which
came in as the No. 2 seed, in
extra innings to become the
fourth state qualifier.

TUESDAY-WEDNESDAY
SUMMARIES
Northside’s Eagles fin
ished one spot ahead of
Colquitt County in the final
standings, but still carried
the memories of a contro
versial loss to the Packers
in Moultrie. Mitch Horton’s
club left no doubt about the
outcome of the first-round
tournament meeting, the
final score being 8-2.
Sarah Purvis had 10
strikeouts and had a shutout
going until Colquitt scored
two runs on three hits in the
sixth inning.
Hollie Langston was 2-
for-2 with three runs scored
while Cady Mcßight, who
also scored three times, hit
a two-run triple. Heather
Langston had two hits and
drove in three.
That set up another antici
pated rematch for Eagle soft
ball with Lowndes High. It
was at the Eagleplex where
Northside took the Vikettes
to 15 innings before falling.
Purvis pitched again and
gave up just one hit, but it
was a solo home run in what
was a 1-0 Lowndes win.
To qualify for state, the
Eagles needed one more
win against top city rival
Warner Robins High, which
stumbled in the first round
losing to Valdosta and then
knocked out Tift County
High. Debunking the myth
that it’s hard to beat a team
three times in one season,
the Eagles completed the
sweep on the Demonettes
2-1 in eight.
Purvis got the ball again
from Horton and produced
17 more strikeouts. The only
Warner Robins run was off a
Jensen Barrett double. The
Demonettes got the lead
off runner on in the fourth
inning via an error,
