becomes the center of the whole
known universe and beyond.
And somebody might have
the, gall to say, “It’s just another
game.”
Sorry, but even I, Mr. Down-To-
Earth, Keep-It-In-Perspective, am
forced to say that Georgia-Florida
football 2008 will take the college
game into a whole new strato
sphere.
(By the way, how do you like
my Halloween costume? I’m play
ing a high-strung, overly excited,
believes-all-the-hype, nothing-bet
ter-to-do-with-my-life lunatic.)
The interesting thing about any
sport is that there’s the team on
one side with all the players and
coaches and the writers on the
other. You naturally know which
side I fall on. We writers some

From staffreports
Westfield rallied from a minor
3-0 deficit after a quarter to
beat Southland 21-3 in a region
contest that ensure the Hornets
would be hosting a playoff game
this coming week (against an
opponent to be determined).
The Hornets, after the
Raiders had netted their only
score on a 28 yarder, went
ahead for good with 10:45 left in
the second. Quarterback Casey
times have a tendency to forget
that we don’t play the games, nor
do we develop the game plans.
But you have to love what’s
already been written in advance
of this year’s Georgia-Florida con
test. Some of it has to do with
last year’s mass celebration by the
Bulldogs and how the Gators plan
to respond this time around.
What stands out to me, though, is
that the focus is on how last week
end’s games factor into what will
happen today. Florida destroyed
Kentucky, and with that “served
notice” to Georgia that the Tim
Tebow-led express is finally click
ing on all cylinders.
This comes from a writer from
Orlando whom I have met before
and enjoy reading week after
week.
On the other hand, Georgia
defeated LSU in such a way that,
“You’ve been warned, Urban
Meyer.” The point is that nobody
Young found John Peake with a
pass to around the 10-yard line.
Westfield had a hook-and-ladder
play on, so when Peake caught
it, he pitched it to Zach Crowe
who took it into the endzone.
Just after that, Jarrod Taylor
intercepted a Southland pass
and advanced it 12 yards.
Young, on a keeper, went 66
yards following that and into
the endzone.
There was no score in the

third and then with 1:13 left in
the game, Young scored again,
this time from the 6.
Joel Revis, who was fighting
off an injury from the previous
week, did the kicking duties. He
made all the PATs but the last
was far from easy. A penalty
pushed the ball back making it
from 34 yards, the farthest dis
tance he’s tried all year.
The Hornets also got a scare
in the game when John Lee
puts 52 on the board against the
Tigers in Baton Rouge and that
the Bulldog offense is, you guessed
it, finally clicking on all cylinders
like the No. 1 preseason ranking
predestined. This comes from a
writer from Atlanta whom I am
not all that found of because of
the shameless pandering to what
Bulldog people apparently want
to hear.
It was obvious to me that Georgia
has issues on defense, depth up
front being first and foremost. And
we all know the ironic part of the
LSU game was that, as porous as
the D looked, that unit made the
ultimate difference with Darryl
Gamble’s two interception returns
into the end zone.
Tim Tebow ... let me take a min
ute here to say that Tim Tebow is
one quality human being. I am not
going to list all of his humanitar
ian accomplishments, but he is
the kind of person you want living
took a hard hit up the middle by
several players.
Statistician Rob Brooks said
he had to be carried off in an
ambulance but he added that
several people said they saw Lee
moving his arms, so he thought
it was just precautionary.
Westfield ended up with 11
first downs, Southland 14.
The Raiders also attempted 31
passes and completed nine of
those. Two were intercepted,
in your neighborhood, the kind
you want addressing kids during
school programs.
Everyone has a fault, though,
and Tebow’s is wearing that dis
gusting looking uniform. And I
still say he is only the reigning
Heisman Trophy winner based on
11 games in 2007. He has yet to do
anything against the Bulldogs, and
that may be the biggest motivator
of them all.
Can I say once and for all that
I hated the celebration? Even as
it unfolded before all our eyes, I
knew, “Nothing good can come of
this.” Bottom line is, I wouldn’t
condone anyone doing that, espe
cially the team I support, because
I don’t want it in turn happening
to my side.
Am I sounding less than optimis
tic? Does it show that much? We
may need more than 52 points, or
at least get saved by the bell at the
end of the third round (remember,
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 2008
the one by Taylor and a pick by
John Peake, who advanced it
23 yards.
Both teams were penalized
four times for 45 yards. Westfield
lost two fumbles but recovered
both. Southland didn’t fumble
at all. The Raiders punted four
times for a 34-yard average,
the Hornets three times for the
same average.
Young finished the night pass
ing three-of-seven for 32 yards.
this started off with boxing refer
ences).
I’m not even optimistic about
the Southeastern Conference over
all living up to its “most domi
nant” reputation. Right now
the SEC has three great teams,
Georgia, Florida and an Alabama
team that has a clear path to the
title game in Atlanta. The Tide’s
opponent should be determined in
Jacksonville.
Vanderbilt flirted with a ‘great’
rating, but is merely good right now
and probably falling. Others with
the ‘good’ mark are LSU, Auburn
and Tennessee, though some may
argue about the Plainsmen and
the Vols being overrated there.
Everybody else, and that includes'
South Carolina, are either average
or below.
But losing to West Virginia,
and UCLA, and Duke, why, that’s
grounds for getting your member
ship revoked.
