Halloween collectibles:
the older, the scarier
All about antiques
I
Of course everyone knows
about the history of the
beginnings of All Hallows
Eve with the pagan festivals
of the Celts and Druids and
then the changing of the
celebration to All Saints Day
by the Romans. However,
Halloween American style,
really caught on in the
1920’5.
Halloween parties were
held for adults with the
hostess setting up tables for
the guests to play mahjong
or other popular card games
of the era. Tables and walls
were decorated with various
paper Halloween decorations
and guests came in disguise.
As souvenirs of the festive
night, party-goers would
take home candy containers,
lanterns or noisemakers.
Trick-or-treat as we know
it didn’t come until the 30s
and 40s when the holiday
became more child/family
oriented. Today, Halloween
comes in only second to
Christmas as the most prof

once again becoming a popu

Halloween is a mainly
American holiday although
most of the sought after
Halloween collectibles were
made in Germany. This is
because after World War I,
Germany had to pay war
reparations to the allies
and many artists were put
to work creating items for
export. Huge retailers of the
era such as F.W. Woolworth
and Sebastian Kresge were
major importers of German
Halloween decor. In 1935
with the growing German
Reich, production of
Halloween items for export
were discontinued.
Two major American
die-cut and party supply
manufacturers, Beistle and
Dennison Manufacturing
(both still in business today!)
started major production
of Halloween decorations
in 1940. Tin noisemakers
were very popular as well
and were made by several
companies including Chein,
Bugle Toy and Kirchof.
One way to tell older
Halloween collectibles from
the newer ones is that gen
erally the scarier the image,
the older the material.

Halloween images were
meant to be scary up until
the 1950’s when they became
more “cutesy”.
Halloween collectibles
didn’t really become “hot”
until 1995. Martha Stewart’s
television show helped spur
the market as well as baby
boomers looking for memo
ries from years past. True
vintage Halloween decor is
hard to find, especially from
the 20’s-40’s.
Those decorations were
meant to last just for one
night. Lanterns burnt up,
candy containers were emp
tied and discarded and other
decorations tossed out at the
end of the night.
Also, as usual, I warn
you to be on the lookout
for reproductions. There
are some very good ones out
there sold by reputable cata
log companies such as The
Victorian Trading Company.
