Monitors, video cards, 3-D graphics for gamers
The government,
scientists, or math
ematicians of the
world, did not drive one
of the greatest advance
ments in computer technol
ogy. Computers could always
crunch numbers and deci
pher even the most com
plex molecular experiment.
That’s what they were made
for. Nope, the greatest tech
nology was developed for
and is used by the computer
gamer and the technology is
3-D graphics.
The big change came in
1992 when a small company
called id Software created a
new game called Wolfenstein
3D that launched and entire
ly new species of games. In
these games the players look
out into a 3D world interact
ing with walls, floors, and
enemies to stop their con
quest. Wolfenstein 3D shook
the PC gaming world to its
foundations as there were
very few PCs available to
provide the power to pro
duce the 3D graphics.
But they took the chance
that there were enough to
draw interest and won. The
owners, John Carmack and
John Remero, the creators of
id Software are the fathers of
3-D gaming and changed the
way PCs worked. Powered
by the wallets of tens of
million PC gamers always
demanding more and better,
the video industry constant
ly produces new video cards
and new software titles that
make today’s games incred
ibly realistic and fun.
This technology has
spilled over into business
and engineering community

Thus, by conspiring among
one another, they kept their

There may be times when
the general public will not
benefit from knowledge con
cerning political business, but
this particular action, for what
ever alleged reasons, allowed
six individuals of secondary
importance, secretly working
together, to collectively usurp
the mayor’s chartered power
granted under the Warner
Robins “strong-mayor” type of
city government. The result
of this action was that, by
strength of numbers, relega
tion of the mayor away from
his rightful seat as head of
the city council into a situa
tion not of his choosing and
without his consent or prior
knowledge.
After impressing Walker
into a situation of forced clois
ter, the council came on like
“gang busters”; going so far
as to give Clifford Holmes
the same salary as Walker. I
am not privy to the motives,
political or otherwise, behind
the council’s actions, but their
actionSjCertainly fail the smell
test. I can see where the
Mayor Pro Tern could in two
years benefit politically from
the council’s action in that he
could claim some credence of
electability because he had
polished the mayor’s seat for
a few weeks.

So beginning with article
and spanning over the next
two or three articles I will
be writing to the gamers
out there and those who are
interested in taking it up.
So let’s start with the
monitor or video display.
Video displays for the PC
come in two different types;
CRT and LCD. The Cathode
Ray Tube monitor is the one
with the long pointed back
end and weighs about 5-10
pounds. The Liquid Crystal
Display is becoming the most
common video display. They
are thinner, lighter, use less
power and are flicker-free.
On the back of your com
puter there are two types
of connectors, a DVI and
a VGA. DVI Digital Video
Interface uses a digital sig
nal and is the best connector
to use if you want the most
out of your LCD monitor.
The Video Graphics Adapter
uses analog signals and was
the standard for the older
CRT monitors.
Digital actually makes the
monitor and the video card
cheaper, provides a clearer
signal and makes installa
tion easy. The video card
industry is not ready to
the best place in Georgia to
raise children and I agree with
them. But, this did not occur by
happenstance or overnight. It
happened because there has
been a firm and guiding hand
on the city’s tiller; and also
because of all the good peo

This honor also gives

being named Perry High’s
first National Agriscience
Fair winner. (Note: You can

Edward’s project focused
on insect control in beef
production; specifically, how
common over-the-coun
ter, oil-based test material
affects the skin of cattle.
Edward got the idea for his
completely convert to digital
LCD technology yet, so they
hedge their bets, and allow
you to use either by provid
ing both connections on all
computers.
So, although you can use
the VGA adapter on your
LCD monitor you will not be
as happy with the results.
It is normally blurry and
looks out of proportion. So
the first thing you need to
know is the type of monitor
and adapter you have and
use the correct connection.
CRT is VGA and LCD is DVI
(see you’re picking up on the
jargon already).
Power conservation is an
issue in every household
and business. CRTs and
LCD monitors differ greatly
in the amount of electricity
they require. A CRT moni
tor uses about half of all the
power needed to run a desk
top PC. A typical CRT uses
approximately 120 watts.
When powered down into
sleep mode it still holds a
current of about 25 watts
and when shut off power is
reduced to 15 watts.
An LCD monitor uses less
than half of the electricity
that a CRT uses. At peak
periods of performance a 19-
inch LCD uses around 33
watts and less than 2 watts
when shut off. Now multiply
those wattages by 100 CRT
monitors versus 100 LCD
monitors in an office envi
ronment and guess who gets
the larger electric bill with
less the quality?
So LCD technology is a
good thing.
This is a good stopping
point. Next week I’ll write
surrounding communities in
Houston County. If you don’t
believe Donald Walker had
a hand in this, you must be
very happy, because as the
old cliche goes, “Ignorance is
Bliss”.
