Five schools receive state awards for Academic Performance

Five Houston County
schools, according to a
release, have won Single
Statewide Accountability
System awards from
the Governor’s Office of
Student Achievement.
Bonaire Elementary, Lake
Joy Primary, Morningside
Elementary, Quail Run
Elementary and Thomson
Middle are five of 279
schools recognized across
the state for improvement
and achievement during the
2007-2008 school year. The
test scores of 2,200 Georgia
schools were reviewed to
determine the schools with
the most significant academ
ic achievement.
The awards are present
ed in collaboration with
the Georgia Department
of Education. Award-win
ning schools receive a ban
ner and commendation let
ter from Gov. Sonny Perdue.
The SSAS award structure
combines criteria for making
Adequate Yearly Progress
with Criterion-Referenced
Competency Test scores
achieved by elementary and
WestfliHil students
recognized as AP Scholars

Scholar status is granted to
students who receive grades
of 3 or higher (with 5 being
the highest possible score) on
three or more AP Exams.
In addition, two Westfield
students from the graduating
Class of 2008, Jacob Parnell
and Hunter Wojohn, earned
AP Scholar with Honor sta
tus. The AP Scholar with
Honor status is granted to
students who receive an aver
age grade of at least 3.25 on
all AP Exams taken through
out the high school career,
and a grade of 3 or higher on
four or more of these exams.
About 18 percent of the
1.6 million students world
wide who took AP Exams
performed at a sufficiently
high level to also earn an AP

Award levels are Platinum,
Gold, Silver and Bronze in
two categories:
1) Greatest Gains for
schools that showed the
greatest improvement on the
CRCT or GHSGT;
2) Highest Performance
for schools with the highest
percentage of students meet
ing and exceeding academic
standards on the CRCT or
GHSGT.
Superintendent David
Carpenter remarked, “I am
so veiy proud of our schools
that have earned this dis
tinction! The faculty, staff,
administrators and parents
are to be commended for this
recognition. This is another
indicator that our schools
are committed to meeting or
exceeding the highest aca
demic standards.”
Bonaire Elementary won
a Silver award in the high
est performance category for
having at least 96 percent
of students meet and exceed
standards, with at least 25
percent exceeding CRCT
Scholar Award.
