Will gridiron success carry over for Westfield?
Season
preview
By MA TTHEW BROWN
Journal Sports Writer
Westfield’s success in foot
ball during the 2008 sea
son could wind up being the
best thing to happen for ...
Hornet basketball.
While boys head coach Jake
Walls continued his assis
tant coaching duties in foot
ball, his mind never strayed
too far from what he has
coming back for the hard
wood in 2008-09, and he’s
a firm believer that what’s
happening on the gridiron
will bring more excitement
to the upcoming Westfield
basketball season.
It all starts for the Hornets
with the summer season,
and that’s where Walls
draws most of his assess
ments about his next team.
He said the summer gave
some young sophomores
a chance to improve and
opened the auditions for a
new ballhandler to replace
graduated Keenan Malone.
“Two guys did a good job
with that,” said Walls. “John
Peake is who I thought would
end up doing it most of the
time even though he is more
of a forward type player. But
Casey Young actually had a
great summer taking care of
the ball.
“And then the two young
guys, Wesley Murph and
Wesley Rust, both had oppor
tunities to play and had a
good summer.
“The big thing with this
team is we have seven

Warner Robins and Northside

Dodge Directors Cup, a measure
of the schools’ overall athletic
programs. Perry is 28th.
Houston County has 176
points. They came from cheer

state), softball (53 for making
the Final 16), cross country (26,

Warner Robins has 118 points.
Those came from cheerleading
as well (54 for finishing 12th at

the boys and their finish of 20th

Northside currently has

Final 16 at state. Northside’s
numbers - those affecting the
overall ratings for that matter
- are a bit misleading, however.

The rest of the top five in
AAAAA are as follows: Peachtree
Ridge, 327 (does not include foot
ball); Mill Creek, 310 (also does
not include football), Walton,
305 (does include football) and
Chapel Hill, 292 (no football).
As far as Perry, it has 117
points. Those came from cross
country (54 for the boys finish
ing 12th at state), cheerleading
(38 for an 18th-place finishing)
and softball (25 for making it as
one of the Final 32).
The top five are: Oconee
County, 400; St. Pius X, 386;
Columbus, 376; Woodward
Academy, 314 and Flowery
Branch, 256.

Rust. Peake and Young are
prominent football players,
as are two other seniors,
Joel Revis and John McCord.
Kellen Shuford rounds out
the senior group.
“All seven of those guys
have played a decent
amount,” said Walls. “Six
of them were in the regular
rotation last year. I expect
all seven to contribute this
year.
“That’s a good thing, espe
cially with football going
deep into the playoffs.”
The Hornet football squad
played at Stratford in the
semifinals on Friday (Nov.
21). With a win, Westfield
would go to the state cham
pionship game on Nov. 28.
The basketball regular sea
son begins the following
Tuesday, Dec. 2, at Mount
de Sales.
“It’s good we have seven
seniors who already know
what our calls are and what
our defenses are and what
our offensive sets are,” said
Walls. “I’m not saying it’s
going to be pretty, but at
least they’ll know what I’m
talking about.”
Westfield’s success could
rest on the broad shoulders
of Amrit, last year’s GISA
state leader in shot block
ing.
