Never too 'Ybung' to learn the importance of athletics, academics
With Westfield’s
total domination
over Stratford in
the state semifinals, 58-14,
the entire Hornet football
team is to be commended.
However, one player stood
out above the rest, senior
quarterback, Casey Young.
In that one game Casey
scored five times on 13 car
ries for 81 yards and had a
53-yard interception return
which also resulted in a
touchdown. How many high
school football players ever
have a game like that? Casey
now holds a coveted spot in
the Westfield record books.
Every school has its “super
jock”, BMOC, (Big Man On
Campus), whose attitude is
as big if not bigger than his
talent. That is “not” how
anyone would describe Casey

The point is clear: a good
education is critical to an
individual’s career, their
quality of life, and the health
of their family. And that,
in turn, is critical to the
health of society as a whole.

Young. With a game like he
had, Casey holds claim to
huge bragging rights but
instead he gave credit for his
night to Head Coach Ronnie
Jones and the great blocking
he had from his offensive
line.
Casey is a kind, respect
ful and reserved young man.
A former math teacher of
Casey’s, Jolene Ciccerelli,
described him as: “Not an in
current system need to be
made to set kids on a course
toward a successful future,
not sentence them to cycles
of poverty.
Fortunately, the Georgia
legislature passed legislation
over the past two years that
expands education options
dramatically in both the
public and private education
arenas.
These new laws reflect the
reality that while a major
ity of students will receive a
quality education, there are
many whose needs will not
your face athlete. (He) just
gets the job done.”
He is very well liked
among faculty and students.
I taught Casey Social Studies
during his seventh, eighth
and Junior years. Many days
I had to double check my roll
and ask another student if he
was in class that day. Casey
never said a word but when
it came time to grade papers
that is when I noticed him,
always in my “A” group.
After the game, I over
heard my 8-year-old son,
Parker, telling a friend about
Casey’s amazing game. I told
them that what made Casey
a “super star” was that not
only is he a great athlete
but he is outstanding in the
classroom as well.
I wanted to impress upon
these young boys that grades
be met through traditional
academic means.

Casey is a standout in foot
ball, basketball and base
ball all while keeping his a
straight-A average.
He has received numerous
awards during honors cer
emonies and he will gradu
ate with honor roll status.
Casey plans to attend the
University of Georgia but
I will be calling my good
buddy, Nick Saban, to tell
him about the incredible ath
lete and student he could
have in Casey Young.
Oh, and Westfield will be
playing Deerfield-Windsor
for the state championship
Friday night. Casey’s sec

the head football coach for
Deerfield.
