Sun Power for Schools workshop held
Special to the Journal
More than 40 math and sci
ence teachers, according to a
release, were on the receiv
ing end of the lesson dur
ing a recent Sun Power for
Schools’ Teacher Learning
Lab.
The full-day training ses
sion, hosted by Georgia’s
electric membership cor
porations), including Flint
Energies, provided teach
ers with hands-on instruc
tion for working with their
schools’ photovoltaic (solar
energy) system as well as
lesson plans for their class
rooms.
There are currently 26
middle and high schools
throughout Georgia that
have an operational lkW
grid-tied photovoltaic system
onsite as part of the Sun
Power for Schools program.
Through the program, EMCs
work with a middle or high
school to install a photovolta
ic system to harness energy
from the sun, and students
can participate in a number
of labs and exercises to wit
ness first-hand the benefits
of solar energy.
Huntington Middle School,
in partnership with Flint
Energies, has a system
installed at the school to edu
cate students about renew
able energy and its affect
on the environment. Gwen
McDade, Ted Monbeck, Kia
Wyche and Laurie Coggins
attended the training session
Nov. 5.
During the training, EMC
representatives discussed the
importance of introducing
students to the concepts of
photovoltaic technology and
green energy; familiarized
teachers with the photovolta
ic system; and demonstrated
how data from the system
could be incorporated into
classroom projects.
