Eagles notch first win; WF sweeps, Panthers 2-0
From staff reports
Kenya Ward’s basket with 1.5 sec
onds remaining in regulation gave
the Northside High boys basketball
team its first win of the 2008-09 sea
son Tuesday. The Eagles beat Peach
County High in Ft. Valley 71-70, and
the win was also the first for new
head coach Ken Price.
Pierre Solomon led Northside (1-

Demonettes beat Dublin; boys fall
By MATTHEW BROWN
Journal Sports Writer
In a game of spurts - both
good and bad for Warner
Robins High’s girls basket
ball team - the Demonettes
had the last one good spurt
to start the fourth quarter
Tuesday. The run of 13-1
sent Warner Robins to a 64-
52 win in the 2008-09 home
opener against the Dublin
High Lady Irish.
The Demonettes of head
coach Tom Mobley led the
game all the way up to the
late minutes of the third
quarter Dublin took its first
advantage, 39-38, with 50
seconds remaining. It was
the only lead Dublin had as
Warner Robins fought for a
tied score, 42-42, going into
the final eight minutes.
In the 13-1 run, the
Demonettes forced seven
turnovers and broke Dublin’s
efforts at full-court pressure.
Danielle Gazaway passed to
Jilesha Orange for a bas
ket against the press, and
Gazaway later took a steal
in for two points and a 52-43
lead. Point guard Quinshay
Williams also went end-to
end to score.
When Dublin cut it down
to nine, 57-48, Williams beat
the pressure with an assist
to 5-11 junior Courtney
Johnson. Gazaway did the
same thing for an assist to
Orange, who had 11 points
off Mobley’s bench.
Gazaway and Williams
each scored a team-high 15
points. Williams opened the
game scoring a 3-pointer
off the glass, and Gazaway
answered with consecutive
baskets from long range.
Dublin’s Cierra
Washington was left open
to drive the lane three times
in the opening quarter. That
kept the score tied 12-12 late
in the period until Orange
ended it with a basket off
her own steal.
Warner Robins’ second
quarter was all about press
ing, steals and transition

We Bulldog fans do love
our head coach. Amazing,
though, when you think
about it. He will tell his
players to intentionally get
a celebration penalty. He
will create gimmicks to get
the fans all fired up.
It seems, however, that
Mark Richt would rather
get all of his teeth pulled
out - sans Novocain - than
dismiss any assistant coach.
Who wouldn’t want to work
for somebody who offers
that sense of job security?
Maybe Richt doesn’t see
too many better options
out there. The University
of Texas pretty much told
everybody they can’t have

Price and the Northside Eagles are

school aged players from Australia
(both varsity and junior varsity) on

This piece really shouldn’t
be about Georgia Bulldog
football. No, the moment
belongs, after a seven-year
wait, to Georgia ... Tech.
Yes, every once in a while I
should say something nice
- something at all - about
the ... Georgia ... Tech ...
football ... program.
Right now, the Yellow
Jackets must be feeling
the same way Georgia
did this time last year. It
could be argued that the
hottest team going in the
Atlantic Coast Conference
is Georgia Tech. If the peo
ple in Athens aren’t wit
ness enough, then take a
trip to Miami.
But, based on the entire
season’s results, the Jackets
will not be playing in the
ACC championship game.
Remember, the Bulldogs,
as much of a roll they were
on to end 2007, didn’t do
three second chances to score
to just one by Orange for the
Demonettes. Warner Robins
led 27-23 at halftime.
Mobley’s team exhibited
some patience to work the
enough early to secure its
Southeastern Conference
division. As much as people
were convinced Georgia
would have topped LSU, my
bet is this weekend Georgia
Tech beats Boston College
and earns a BCS spot in the
Orange Bowl.
That’s not going to hap
pen, however, because about
10 months ago (or was it
weeks) Virginia Tech beat
the Jackets. Yes, like our
loss to Tennessee in ’O7,
those first few games do
matter.
Even though it’s been put
on record that the top goal
for first-year Tech coach
Paul Johnson was to beat
Georgia, I hope he and
everyone else who wears
those colors realize what
really matters in today’s
college game. The Bulldogs
won two SEC titles under
Richt in years we didn’t
beat Florida.
