And don’t think for a
moment that fact that each
and every one of you sports
a sparkling 6-6 record takes
anything away from the
post-season. After all, this
is the modern football age,
where everyone’s a winner.
Bring on the post-season!
A few years back, the
NCAA passed a rule that

Football Bowl Subdivision,
FBS) schools had to have
six victories (over other FBS
schools) to be bowl eligible.

On the following morning
(Tuesday), the Trinity group
left Georgia for California
to play in San Francisco
and Santa Monica as well
as check out a UCLA Bruins
game.
“(Trinity) is a high school
just like Northside,” said
Morrissey. “We have 1,200

to 20 minutes from down

“We tour America every

give our kids a cultural expe

Of course, at the time most
teams played only eleven
games. So by winning six,
theoretically only teams
with winning records could
play in a bowl game. Oh,
those clever schools. They
just added a game, or two

game. With a dozen games
on the schedule, a sfx-pack

3-4 weeks to play a game in
Shreveport.
You’ll hear the coaches
talk about how hard their
teams played this year,
worked through adversity,
played some tough breaks
and tougher opponents, etc.

Christmas, or winter, breaks.
Trinity’s break began Dec.
5 and will end at the end of
January.
As for basketball, they are
in one of three conferences
of private schools in Sydney.
Morrissey said if they win
their conference (the season
is still on-going), they will
play the other conference
winners and the top teams
in public and Catholic school
conferences.
The reward should be a nice
trip a warm, faraway place
for another game, right? So
Colorado State gets to go to
Albuquerque for the New
Mexico Bowl.
Kentucky gets to travel all
the way to Memphis, whose
Tigers got a real break via a
trip to St. Petersburg.
Now that’s bowl terri
tory. Florida Atlantic does
get a long road trip - leav
ing south Florida to head to
Detroit for the Motor City
Bowl. (Between the 0-13
Lions and the auto indus
try, does anyone want to
visit Motown right now?)
And Notre Dame gets a trip
to Honolulu for the Hawaii
Bowl. The luck of the Irish
indeed.
“We’ve had a couple of
tough seasons the last couple
of years,” he said. “We’ve
won three conference cham
pionships in the 2000 s, the
last one in 2004. We are
undefeated back home at the
moment.
“We play a bit different
than Georgia. We play inter
national rules with a 24-sec
ond shot clock. That’s the
one thing we’ve struggled a
bit with is not having a shot
stroke and earned six points.
“We lost some ground today with
our four 200 Free Relays not scor
ing,” Hawkins said. “We need to
remedy this before next weekend.”
The girls Medley and 400 Free
Relays earned a total of 20 pts.
How is all this happen
ing? Why do 68 of the 119
teams (.571 for those doing
the math) in the FBS get to
go to a bowl game? There
are lots of reasons, but the
easiest is a four-letter word:
ESPN. The first 16 of these
bowl games are televised by
ESPN.
Then the NFL Network,
of all channels, snags a
couple. ESPN has a total
of 23 bowl games includ
ing ones named after nuts
(Emerald Bowl), cyber-pizza
(PapaJohns.com Bowl), and
mufflers (Meineke Bowl).

“You can’t fall behind too
much otherwise teams take
the air out of the ball.”
Even though he is just a
freshman, Chircu, accord
ing to Morrissey, is develop
ing both an academic and

Stanford, Butler, Davidson

showing interest in his ser

2011 through 2013 plus the
Bowl Championship Game
itself - which technically
isn’t a bowl game - for 2011
through 2014.
And ESPN’s sister net
work ABC has the grand
daddy of them all, the Rose
Bowl, from 2011 through
2014. Why isn’t the BCS
Championship on broadcast
network ABC instead of
cable network ESPN? Well,
according to ESPN, just
because. At ESPN it’s all
about ESPN.
If you find yourself won
dering why you’re watch
ing one of these mediocre
bowl games, just remember
the classic explanation of
Seinfeld’s George Costanza:
“Because it’s on.”
