into overtime. People were
wondering if a scrimmage
would have overtime.
Wanted to call Donovan
McNabb to find out.
Double overtimes. Even
triple overtimes. I’ve seen
them all. And each time the
reaction is the same, one
that cannot be printed.
As Ken Price, Northside
High boys coach, expressed
after his Eagles played the
Trinity Grammar team
frdm Sydney, Australia, on
Monday, I, too, hope there
is a lot of excitement local
ly about this current prep
hoops season. Most coaches
don’t want to talk much
about their teams in this
first month since'it some
times takes a while for these
squads to hit their strides.
But they still approach
every game like the state
championship is on the
line.
How about this: Perry
High and Peach County
High, two big rivals, are
taking their battle to a big
stage. On Jan. 24, 2009, at
Ft. Valley State University,
the Panthers and Trojans
will engage in the “Battle
of the Border.” Plenty of
seating, advance tickets for
$5 each begin selling on
Jan. 13 at each school, and
there’s a minimal parking
fee yet to be determined.
That means, for those with
Perry High schedules, the
game on Jan. 10 between
the two teams moves from
Perry to the Peach County
High gym.
Here’s another inter
esting aspect about high
school basketball. Watching
the three local boys teams
that play in Class AAAAA,
the starting lineups for all
three - Northside, Warner
Robins and Houston County
- do not contain any football
players. It just shows these
schools are big enough and
do a great job of promoting
diversity in athletics.
Aside from basketball,
there’s been a whole lot of
wrestling going on since the
start of December.
Really taking a close look
at the high school variety,
my interest peaks more
when the bigger wrestlers,
171 pounds or better, get
on the mat. I’ve suggested
a few rules changes for high
school sports; here’s anoth
er one.
When you get to the
heavier weights, don’t con-

Act II: Swinging Voting
Here are some categories
for honors you won’t find
on the ESPY’s or any other
meaningless awards show.
The first one has to
do with sports panels.
Different from broadcast
teams, sports panels are
those groups of three or
more people in a studio or
on location at a big sporting
event doing pre-game, half
time, post-game or regular
daily talk and analysis.
The question - or honor
- is: Creates the Most
Uncomfortable Atmosphere
on a Sports Panel. In other
words, who is the best at
making the host really
watch what he says and
then cringe when he says
anything.
The nominees are:
Charles Barkley, NBA
on TNT (his comments on
Auburn’s hiring practices
notwithstanding)
Terry Bradshaw, NFL
on FOX (he could make
people jittery on American
Chopper)
Lee Corso, ESPN’s College
Football Game Day (I just
really like doing these par
enthetical asides)
Here’s one just get
ting started. Bob Knight,
ESPN’s College Basketball
Game Day
Finally, a posthumous one
(the guy’s not dead, but his
sportscasting career didn’t
live long). Rush Limbaugh,
NFL Countdown on ESPN.
You can cast your votes ...
well, I don’t expect anyone
to actually vote, just ponder
the idea for a while and
then get back to the last
minute shopping.
Here’s another cat
egory: Professional Sports
Franchise that would do
Everyone including Itself
a Favor by Shutting Down
Operations.
Nominees:
Oakland Raiders (how
many more former coaches
are going to tear this orga
nization apart Lane Kiffin
style?)
Detroit Lions (but not for
long, Matthew Stafford may
be on his way to pull a Matt
Ryan)
New York Knicks of the
Isaiah Thomas era, not to
be confused with the Knicks

Honorable Mention
Kim Burgess, Warner
FLW Outdoors, named after Forrest L.
Wood, the legendary founder of Ranger
Boats, is the largest fishing tournament
organization in the world. In 2008 alone,
the organization offered more than 90,000
anglers the chance to win over S4O million
through 230 tournaments in 10 circuits.
starting in 2010 when, the
New York Yankees sign
Leßron James and loan
him out to Madison Square
Garden
The Tampa Bay Rays
were on the list this time
last year, but with a team
that collectively didn’t out
earn two Yankees infielders,
temporarily made Florida
a baseball state. You could
replace them with the
Florida Marlins, but even
though they can’t outdraw
Warner Robins American
Little League at a district
tournament in Macon, they
somehow keep putting a
wild-card contender on the
field.
The Atlanta Thrashers?
Atlanta could be the first city
to lose three NHL teams.
The Flames left for Calgary
(one), the Thrashers could
one day be sharing Toronto
with the Maple Leafs (two),
and Atlanta will get anoth
er franchise in expansion
but lose it in five years, so
that’s three.
And that leads me to ...
Act 111 (hopefully not
the final act): A Holiday
Review
Clement C. Moore is the
author of the most famous
of all holiday verses, “A Visit
from St. Nicholas,” which
begins “Twas the Night
Before Christmas.”
I can only wonder, after
having worked with the man
for more than three years
now, if Home Journal man
aging editor Don Moncrief
is somehow a direct descen
ded of Moore.
As of this writing I have
a new responsibility of sug
gesting my own headlines.
Before, I left that up to
Don’s creative touch. When
it came to these sports col
umns, the results led me to
the above conclusion.
Just looking over the last
12 months alone (including
last December), it provides
not only a good recap of
sports news in that time
span, but a vision of Moore’s
influence that must always
dance in Don’s head.
“On Bowls, On Petrino,
On Georgia and Bulldogs.
On World Series, On Main
Event, On Track and
Sportsmanship. ”
But do you recall the most
famous name in 2008 sports
of all? Phelps? No way. Big
Brown, of course, and this
one’s still running strong.
Merry Christmas, Houston
County.
