Reaching youp desired outcome - a new, healthier 'normal'
Over the past five
weeks, I have
been working my
way through the six stag
es of change described in
Changing for Good by James
Prochaska, John Norcross,
and Carlo DiClemente.
Let’s say that at some time
in the past, you had never
even considered building
leaders among those indi
viduals under your author
ity. You’d have been in the
“precontemplation” stage.
Once you started thinking
about whether developing
your direct reports would
be desirable (and why you’d
never considered this idea
before), you’d have moved
into the “contemplation”
stage.
If you concluded that build
ing future leaders would be
a good idea for you and your
organization, you would
then enjoy the anticipation
associated with moving into
the “preparation” stage.
You’d start actively planning
for how you could cause that

this book for Christmas.
The book contains over 60
of Grizzard’s columns never
before published in a book.
Grizzard died in March of
1994.
I thoroughly enjoyed this
book! I will miss Lewis
Grizzard’s columns and
books. He was a rare talent,
and I can relate to much
of what he wrote - being
a southerner and a great
Georgia Bulldog fan is an
added bonus!

March 21, 1995. Wendy
gave me this book for my
birthday. Wendy, Haley, Gray
and Janice came to Atlanta
during the 1995 General
Assembly on Tuesday, March
7 and all visited the Capitol
on Wednesday, March 8.
I thoroughly enjoyed the
book - one of the best I’ve
read in quite a while. I could

growth to happen. Then you
would have taken “action”
in a variety of ways, each
designed to move you closer
to that objective.
Last week I talked about
the joys and anxieties associ
ated with consolidating your
changes while in the “main
tenance” stage, which usual
ly lasts six months or more.
Actually, few improvements
advance into the “termi
nation” stage, this week’s
focus.
Individuals seeking major
improvement rarely move
cleanly through all six
stages. Most experience a
few lapses and sidetracks,
cycling back through pre-
to Vaugh Rhomer - different
though they were. Or maybe
they weren’t too different
- maybe it was just differ
ent circumstances, or maybe
one seized opportunity, and
one did not. In any event, I
highly recommend this book
for good reading.
Tales Out of Trial by R.
Perry Sentell, Jr. Finished
Jan. 31, 1995. Perry Sentell
was one of my law profes
sors. He sent me this little
book. I have read other books
by Perry Sentell, but to my
knowledge, all of them dealt
with technical legal subjects.
This book deals with unusual
incidences in negligence tri
als.
It was a very enjoyable
little book for me. Perry
Sentell came to the UGA
Law School about the time
that I entered. Back then,
he was a shy but excellent
professor. Now, he is still
excellent, but “shy” would
not be a proper description.
He is very flamboyant in the
classroom - in fact, I believe
he is much like an actor who
vious stages. “Trial and
error” is a very effective way
of learning. Although the
insights gained are anchored
firmly, they often come
through frequent and pain
ful errors made along the
way. Satisfactory improve
ment may take more time
and energy than you had
originally anticipated!
Is it possible to still fall
back into old behaviors?
Of course. All kinds of
response options are open to
you Conditions may pres
ent themselves such that
you choose, intentionally
or otherwise, to engage in
some past habit. Change is
often circular and difficult
-merely acknowledge the
slip and move back into the
behaviors you had success
fully adopted before.
Since meaningful change
is a lifetime pursuit, and
“continuous improvement”
is characteristic of the cul
ture of great organizations,
some say that staying in
the termination stage is not
has perfected his act. Perry is
originally from Dooly County
(Pinehurst). My father sold
his father farm equipment
many years ago.
While The Music Lasts by
William M. Bulger. Finished
Dec. 25, 1995. Billy Bulger
is a friend of mine. He
has been President of the
State Legislative Leaders
Foundation, and I am on
the Board of Directors. He
recently (in December, 1995)
resigned to take the position
as President of the University
of Massachusetts.
This is a brand new book
(in fact, mine is an uncor
rected proof). The book is
excellent in every respect and
should be “must reading” for
every public office holder.
It contains many political
truths said as well as they
can be said. I enjoyed this
book immensely. It was sent
to me by Billy as a gift. I got
it on Dec. 22, and I finished it
on Dec. 25.

achievable. However, I love
celebrating hard-won tri
umphs. I avoid the seman
tics and avow, “When a new,
desirable ‘normal’ has been
achieved, you’ve reached the
‘termination’ stage!”
The authors of Changing
for Good identify four stan
dards for confirming the ter
mination stage:
• You have a new self
image that feels consistent
with the improved behav
iors.
• You feel no tempta
tion to engage in previous
behaviors, no matter what
the circumstances.
• You have solid confi
dence in the new “normal”
that characterizes your
behaviors.
• You have a healthi
er lifestyle and culture. In
Finished June 16, 1996
(Father’s Day). This book
was given to me on April 11,
1996 when I spoke to the
Delphian Club (a women’s
club in which Mother is a
member). Excellent book!
Not an “easy read,” but I
hated for the book to end.
Capt. Meriwether Lewis
was quite a man - all on
the expedition, including
Captain William Clark, were
extraordinary. It is hard to
comprehend just how far we
have come as a country since
the early 1800 s.
I really hope that a movie
is made based on this great
work by Ambrose. I believe
that such a movie, if well
done, would be a tremendous
success. Now on to finishing
Lincoln, or should I begin
Grisham’s Runaway Jury ?
So, there you have it - a
dozen good ones. At least, I
thought they were good. I’ll
give you about this many
more, next week.

This article started using
“building future leaders” as
an example of an organiza
tion seeking to make desir
able improvements. I’ve
been privileged to see this
kind of sequential process
take place with organiza
tions that have installed a
system for supporting lead
ership development.
It’s much easier in the
short-term for an organi

whatever existed before.
Typically, that means leaving

from a strategic perspec

makes a lot of sense. Not
only does the investment
immediately strengthen the
individuals and the organi

“Change ” can feel scary at

Dennis Hooper believes con
