Special from
the start
What am I most thankful
for this past year? This isn’t
a hard question for me, but
a hard one to write.
She was born many years
ago, almost 75 years to be
exact. She was very small,
actually small enough to
fit into a shoe box I was
told. Being born that many
years ago, she was lucky to
have survived. Her biologi
cal mother died when she
was only six months old.
That is when the aunt took
over and raised her. She had
four brothers, all older than
her, and they were being
raised by their dad. The
aunt did what she thought
was right, taking the baby
to raise because the father of
the child was a farmer and
already had his hands full
with her four older broth
ers.
This child proved to be
“special” from the start to
not only the aunt, but to
everyone in the family. She
grew up in a loving environ
ment, married after a few
years of college, and had
three children of her own.
This is where the story
begins, or I should say my
story. My earliest memories
of my mother come and go.
Sometimes, I can remem
ber some of my “baby stuff”
days, sometimes I can’t.
Let me tell you what I do
remember today, and why I
will never forget what my
mother did, and has done
and continues to do for me
still today
Wonderful childhood mem
ories of our family grow
ing up will never leave my
side. All of the birthdays,
Christmas’, summer vaca
tions, and holidays that we
shared together are priceless
to me, and the older that I
get, the more I realize that
having good parents like
I did, truly was a blessing
from God. My mother is and
was the “secret ingredient”
that has made my family
life such a great experience.
I irust tell you, though, it
is hard (for me) to repro
duce that “up bringing” in
today’s world with my fam
ily. Everybody is in a hurry
today. Both parents are
being pulled in all directions
just trying to make it to
all of the commitments that
have already been scheduled.
Growing up, we ate around
6 o’clock everyday (I mean
the whole family sat down
together). Today, I couldn’t
tell you the last time that
I sat down and ate at 6pm.
Could You?
If you don’t know my
mother, I’m sorry, and I hope
that you have an opportu
nity to meet her one day. If
you do know her, you know
exactly what I am talking
about. My mother has got
to be one of the kindness
people that I know. She sees
the good in all. Always doing
for the other fellow not
wanting anything in return.
My sister, Kim is similar to
my mother (in many ways)
with the way that she has
raised her children. (Me? I
think that I am more like
my grandmother.. .A little
hard.)
People ask me all of the
time how my mother is
doing. That brings an “inter
nal smile” to me. It’s a con
stant reminder of how very
fortunate I am to have some
a wonderful mother.
There are too many mem
ories of my mother for me
to share with you. Just take
my word for it, and under-

BIG BAD

Journal Staff Writer
Lara Holt is a soft-spo
ken young woman, who
just happens to have a wild
imagination.
How wild? Well, how
about creating a fictional
world in which werewolves
not only prowl the streets
at night looking for human
prey, but are considered
normal citizens during the
day - and have rights.
Holt, who has just pub
lished her first novel, Who’s
Afraid of The Big Bad Wolf,
has also created a heroine
who won’t soon be forgot
ten by readers.
“My name is Holly
Stevens,” the W.C.E.
(Werewolf Catcher/Execu
tioer) explains on the first
page. “I am 25 years old
and five foot two, barely. I
have pale skin and golden
blonde hair that makes my
pale blue eyes stand out so
badly that they almost look
white, especially when I’m
mad.
“Despite my angelic
appearance, I can be quite
scary. Just ask anyone I’ve
killed.”

a mud mask that is left on
for about 10 minutes. At the
end of the session a moistur

skin.
“It is a refreshing experi
ence that will really leave
your skin feeling great,” said
Deßoe.
