Bear Bra wl
Campbell High swipes tourney title from HC
By MATTHEW BROWN
Journal Sports Writer
When the inside game is
sitting on the bench for the
entire final quarter, it’s hard
to win a basketball tourna
ment championship, even on
your home floor.
Campbell High, down by
as many as 10 in the sec
ond half, took advantage of
Houston County’s injury
and foul problems from the
forward positions and won
the 2008 Chick-Fil-A Bear
Brawl boys first-place tro
phy in a 73-71 final Tuesday
at the Bear Den.
It was also the first loss
after eight straight wins for
coach Jody Dean and the
Bears.
In the middle part of the
game, Houston County dis
played lights-out shooting
from the perimeter. Roger
Stanton had 25 points and
Geo Stotts 14.
The crucial moment, how
ever, is when center Brandon
Davey, suffered a foot injury
in the third period and it
carried over into the fourth.
Before that, he was a force
in the paint with 15 total
rebounds, some excellent
defensive work and eight
points.
Trey Grissett, a sophomore
who, like Davey, stands at 6-
6, was also held out of action
for the last eight minutes
with four personal fouls.
It v as a highly anticipated
final with a gym full of local
basketball fans. Each team
set out to play a deliberate
pace without taking a lot
of chances. Campbell was
able to move the ball down
court against the Bear press
and get good shots at the
basket, but with spot-up 3-
pointers by Buddy Bivins
•and Stanton, everything was
tied at 12-all.
Jarrid Nunn, another
Houston forward, followed
in his own missed shot, help
ing the Bears keep pace with
the Spartans, 16-16, with
one quarter gone.
Campbell had its last lead
of the half, 21-19, with an
offensive rebound score.
Houston’s perimeter game
was off track until, at 4:46,
Stanton nailed a 3-pointer.
From there, it was a shoot
ing clinic as Davey made a
two just inside the arc and
Stotts drove for a kick-out
