Temperance Wave in Tennessee.
•
A variety of temperance legislation is expected of the Tennessee Legis
lature now in session, and while it is possible that the larger cities, the
few remaining places "where liquor is sold, will be given an opportunity of
voting the saloons out of existence, no chances will be taken, as there is an
evident sentiment in favor of at least throwing ev6ry possible restriction
around the business. After July Ist saloons can exist only within a pre
scribed limit, which is practically the business section of Nashville. A
bill has been introduced to make the state license SI,OOO and require city
and county to charge the same, making a license cost $3,000. Now, the
*ax is only $250 for the state, and the city and county can charge as much
less as desired. The Chattanooga members are advocating a measure re
quiring that licenses only be issued in that city when the people within
the block where the saloon is located give their approval. Another measure
provides for the forfeiture of license in case of violation of the law, in
the way of Sunday tippling or doing business after hours. It is practically
assured that a new and valid act will prohibit all race horse gambling.
The last Legislature passed such a measure, but it was declared void by
the Supreme Court, being unconstitutional technically in the way it was
drafted. The town of Winchester, which had several times gone “wet,”
recently went “dry” in a primary called by the representative in the Legis
lature to decide whether he should put through a bill wiping out the saloons.

New York’s Drink Bill $1,000,000 a Day.
It seems almost incredible, but it is authoritatively stated that the
drinking bill of the citizens of New York City would, if combined, amount
to the stupendous sum of one million dollars a day!
Naturally the supplies to meet this gigantic demand must come from
every state in the Union and even from the countries beyond th ( e sea.
Kentucky has largely contributed to the amount of whiskey used in New
York, and this has naturally added to the revenue of the liquor dealers
everywhere.
The Prohibition movement, however, is checking the sale of whiskey in
many states and hence its manufacture is also being restricted, while the
enemies of Prohibition are using every possible means to circumvent the
law and to supply material for the trade.
The fact that the papers everywhere are giving more and more space
to this subject and that the “whiskey question” is agitating the whole
civilized world, must mean that the first step is already taken toward the
final cessation of a trade which in one city alone amounts to just one
million dollars a day! We believe that the people are awakening to a
recognition of something more than mere commercial value of an industry
which, while it brings dollars to the pocket, brings death to the soul.

Senator Carmack Declines.
Senator E. W. Carmack has officially announced that he will not accept
the proffered superintendency of the Tennessee Anti-Saloon League, lie so
stated to Rev. W. E. Thompson, Superintendent of the league, at a conference
held between the two. The senator feels that his acceptance of the office
might cripple the league because those who are antagonistic to the senator
might, in directing their fight against him, at the same time cripple the
usefulness of the organization. Then, too, the senator will be in Washing
ton until March 4 attending to his senatorial duties, and this is the time
when his services would be most needed by the league.
