Pertinent Points On Prominent People.
The oldest woman in active journalism is probably Mrs. Cashel Hoey,
an English novelist and woman writer. She is over seventy-six years old
and is still a busy writer for the daily press. Her first newspaper articles
were written in 1856.

at Washington for information regarding the services performed by Sir Henry
Stanley in the American Navy during the civil war.
The spirit of philanthropy has penetrated the high courts of the far
east and Americans may hope that its latest evidence is in some measure
imitative of the methods adopted in the United States, as the wife of the
former minister to this country from China, Aladame Wu Ting-Fang, has
recently paid for the building of a large hospital in Hong Kong.
“Private” John Allen, of Mississippi, who is said to have “joked his
way ” through the House of Representatives for a number of years, has re
tired to practice law in his old home at Tupelo, Miss. He declares he will
cease telling the ludicrous stories which have made him famous because he
fears they may militate against his professional dignity.
Mr. J. B. Martin, of Tacoma, Wash., has sworn to devote the profits
gained from a rich mine which he owns in Alaska to the cause of total ab
stinence, even if these profits should reach as much as $500,000 annually.
An event of interest in literary and diplomatic circles is the acceptance
by James Bryce of the position of British Ambassador to the United States.
Mr. Bryce is the first English man of letters ever sent to this country from
England, while America, on the contrary, has been represented at English
courts by such brilliant literary lights as Motley, Lowell, John Hay and
Washington Irving.
Chicago will celebrate Washington’s birthday in a very elaborate and
appropriate manner. One of the features of the occasion is to be an ad
dress delivered by ex-President Grover Cleveland and it is safe to assert that
this address will bear the finished style and gracefully appropriate char
acter which always marks the speeches of Mr. Cleveland.
Miss Beryl Clark, a young woman who is totally blind, is in charge of
the department for the blind at the Blooklyn public library. She has been
sightless since her fifth year and has mastered all the arts possible for the
blind. Out of the 1,000 blind persons in Brooklyn, nearly 100 are members
of Miss Clark's department, one of her pupils being 60 years old.
William Smith, of Arlington, Mass., is said to be the oldest newspaper
man in the world. He is 98 and still writes regularly. During the World’s
Press Parliament held in St. Louis during the World’s Fair, Mr. Smith was
the veteran correspondent and received much attention from his confreres.
Ornamental needle work is said to be the mother of sculpture and paint
ing and its use dates back 400 years in India and even longer in China.
It was introduced into Madeira by Miss Phelps, a philanthropic English wom
an, who taught it in that Island in 1856. She claimed that it was an em
ployment that did not conflict with domestic duties and today there are about
50,000 Madeira women employed in this work, the remuneration for which
varies from 50 to ten cents a day.

HOW TO RAISE EARLY CABBAGE.
Very few people know how early it
is possible to set out plants for early
cabbage. If the right kind of plants
are used they may be put in the
ground in January and the freezes and
frosts will not hurt them. N. H.
Blitch Co., of Meggetts, S. C., raise
plants on the South Carolina coast
which are toughened by the frosts and
salt air until they are very hardy. Hot
house plants and those raised in the
interior are not fit for early planting.
The pleasant experience of the farmer
on page 16 may be yours if you will
follow his example and order your
plants from the N. H. Blitch Co. This
company plants only the best varie
ties of cabbage and celery seed. Con
sequently their plants are best for
large , production. Pedigreed seed
mean as much in cabbage growing as
pedigreed animals mean in stock rais
ing. Read the Blitch advertisement
and get the best.
