Increase Your
Income
The big, steady and growing demand for
Oliver Typewriters makes this one of the
most attractive Local Agencies available
today.
The market is unlimited. Oliver agents
sell many thousands of Oliver Typewriters
every month.
We divide our earnings on a liberal ba
sis that insures steady incomes for hust
lers.
Holders of the 15,000 Oliver Agencies al
ready established have realized hundreds
of thousands of dollars in profits on type
writer sales.
There are still several hundred localities
where agencies have not yet been opened.
The applicant, if accepted, is given ex
clusive selling rights in his territory dur
ing the life of the contract. We teach Lo
cal Agents how to sell. This free training
includes enrollment in The Oliver School of
Practical Salesmanship.
When he has demonstrated his ability,
the Local Agent is eligible for promotion
to the direct service.
Some of our general officials have risen
direct from the ranks as a result of the
promotional system.

THE GOLDEN AGE FOR WEEK OF SEPT. 18
Dear Little Mother:
I am enclosing you a trio of
poems which you can publish in dif
ferent issues as you see fit. It has
been a long time since I have writ
ten to the Golden Age Circle, but
Genius has not been burning down
this way and then too, I am so very
busy all the time. Ihope to do bet
ter in the future, however. Where
are all our old members—Bartlett
Kelley and Agnes Tyler and several
others? It seems to me they are
staying absent a long time. 1 read
The Golden Age constantly even
though I have not written in so long.
1 wish we could have another con
test or something of the kind soon —
something that would liven us up a
bit. With best wishes, I am,
Yours sincerely,
JULIA IVERSON LANE.
WHEN I REMEMBER YOU
Julia Iverson Lane.
When I remember your noble life.
Your generous heart, your hate of
strife,
When I remember you
All seems right.
When 1 remember your suffering,
Your tortured, bleeding soul,
Your gentle spirit
I ask myself: What am I?
When I remember all you’ve borne,
Those lovely years, those wretched
years,
My soul is wrung
And there are tears.
When I remember you,
A great peace fills my heart,
A peace that only comes, Beloved —
When I remember you.
SLAVES WANT SLAVERY
My father, as most of you know,
was a slave holder before the great
Civil War through America. He i»
herited about twenty-five slaves. He
d’d not know what to do with them.
He had to keep them and support
them. The most pitiable object in
all that country was a freed slave:
one thrown upon the community with
out any protection. Inever shall for
get the day in 1864, when father call
ed the slaves about him and ,with
the Emancipation Proclamation in his
hand, read it and told them they were
free: they could do and go where

they pleased. There was no hilarity,
but a quiet seriousness'. They smiled
but did not shout. A sense of new
ness and responsibility bewildered
them. The fact is they were fed and
clothed just as well as I was. I think
I got more thrashings than the slave
boys did. When we got into trouble
father set on me before them. I ought
to have been an example. The chil
dren were all looked After. I have
heard mother called out after mid
night to attend some sick child, and
sometimes she had eight or ten on
her hands watching them as she did
her own. The pathetic part was,
nearly a year after, they sent a depu
tation back to ask father if he would
receive them back on the old terms;
lake them back on the plantation and
look after them as he did before. He
would have been arrested and sent
to jail. So he encouraged them as best
he could to go out and be independ
ent, make themselves indispensable
in society. They were like children.
He had the responsibility of feeding
and clothing and looking after them
and they were so weak and helpless
they wanted to come back and have
him do it aga’n. They were willing
to lose their freedom for a larger
liberty, even in their slavery. There
is a liberty that asserts itself in giv
ing ourselves back to God in holy
service.
THE RESULT OF SIN
I came into my pulpit one Sunday
morning so full of pain that I could
hardly think. The fever was raging,
and the head was aching. I thought I
ought to preach rather than send the
people home. And while I was preach
ing the measles broke out on me, a»d
some of the people saw the spots.
There was no small-pox epidemic in
that community. If there had been
I think that audience would have
moved out. I did not preach in the
evening, the physic'an said, “You
must be qiret for a few days.” It

HIS PENANCE.
He loved to dive, and he loved to
swim,
And he loved in the tide to play;
Then what in the world was the mat
ter with him
That he sat in the sand all day?
He sat by a girl whose bathing suit,
Whose cap and whose shoes were
dry;
And she would have thought him a
perfect brute
If he hadn’t —so that was why!
