THE LITTLE "STUCK UP.”

modestly answered the young wo
man; and her questioner heaved a
sigh of relief, and seemed to think
her task at an end. Then, suddenly
remembering something else, she
started up with —■
‘‘Well, and what wages do you ex
pect? Enough, I’ll be bound!”
“Whatever you have been in the
habit of paying,” was the answer.
“I ain’t in' the habit of paying any
thing,” was the quick response. “1
never hired any body to do for me be
fore, and shouldn’t now, if it wasn’t
for this dreadful misery in my head.
Seems as if it would split,” and again
the old lady sank back in an agony
of pain.
“Perhaps I can do some thing to
help your head,” said the stranger,
•quietly laying aside her hat and shawl
and advancing toward the sufferer.
My mother was often subject to such
•attacks, and I am familiar with sev

rest easier.”
The small hand lifted the hot, throb
bing hea«, and gently arranged the
pillows more comfortably. Then lay

the disarranged hair softly back from
the flushed face, her touch falling
cool and tender upon the aching head.

■she finished.
“What is your name young woman?
was the abrupt response.

THE HORSE’S
TEN COMMANDMENTS.
Thou shalt give me plenty of pure
water to drink.
Thou shalt supply me with plenty of
wholesome food.
Thou shalt keep me clean and well
groomed, for though a beast of burden,
I am not without pride.
Thou shalt provide me with a straw
bed, that I may rest well at night after
my arduous labor of the day.
Thou shalt not over-load or over
drive me, for there is a limit to my
strength and endurance.
Thou shalt not covet above thy horse,
thy automobile, thy motorcycle, or any
thing else which is around thy place,
for thy horse is a jealous animal.
Thou shalt look carefully after my
health and welfare, that my days may
be many and useful in thy service.
Thou shalt not use me for mere pleas
ure on Sunday after my strenuous
week’s work, for verily, thy horse need#
rest.
Thou shalt not inflict any punishment
upon me that thou wouldst not be will
ing to bear thyself, for (rod made me as
well as you sensitive to the feeling of
punishment.
Thou shalt not mix bitter medicine
with my feed when lam run down in
health, destroying my already weakened
appetite, but O merciful master place
Blackman’s Medicated Salt Brick,
in my feed-box where I may lick
it as nature directs and my system re
quires, that I may be made well and en
abled to serve thee with every particle
of my strength.

I dressed myself hurriedly, and went
out to realize what had been fore
shadowed in my dream. I learned
that, after receiving his wound, he
had been carried to the nearest hos
pital, and, mounting my horse, I pode
rapidly to the place. As I entered
the hospital, I met the surgeon in
charge, who said:
“I am glad you have come. A youth
has been brought here wounded, and
begged me to send for you immel
iately, which I was about doing.”
“What is the character of his
wound?” I inquired.
He replied that he had not exam
ined it, but was about doing so when
I arrived. “Come, go with me,” said
he. We passed down the room, be.

upon which the wounded were lying,
