THE GOLDEN AGE FOR WEEK OF DEC. 11, 1913
may be fixed on something else, the
meaning of the words, for instance.
If more attention were paid to this
detail, we would hear fewer such criti
cisms as “He sings as though he had
a hot potato in his mouth.” “I did not
understand one word, and I do not
know now in what language he was
singing, do you?”
Should you find yourself tired after
singing, I should say “You were care
less about pronouncing on the lips.”
I give many lecture song recitals,
which require at least one solid hour
of vocal effort in song and speech and
I finish in better form than I begin, in
variably.
This is one great factor in the cure
of preacher’s sore throat. Unless one
has catarrhal affections, medicines are
not so necessary as through under
standing of the use of the diaphragm
in breathing, and the labial muscles.
Hum Softly.
You answered my question as to
how long one must study before one
may begin songs. You told me to use
labial muscle exercise, which I have
found wonderfully efficient. My lips
were never accustomed to move at all,
for in eighteen months I have had no
songs or exercises with words. You
asked me how high I could hum with
perfect ease, and to write again in a
month or two. My humming is slow
because it pulls under my ears or chin.
What can I do to help this condition?
I feel so grateful for the splendid hints
that I have received, and thank you
again. I have began to sing a few
songs, with your encouragement.
D. I. L.
The pulling under the ears or chin,
as you express it, is due to the stiffen
ing of the muscles at the base of the
tongue, and is caused probably by your
desire to hum too loudly. A little hum
is sufficient. It is the position or plac
ing that we are seeking and not vol
ume. Nothing is gained by forcing
any tone.
Relax by yawning one hundred times
successively, every three or four hours
during the day, and continue to hum
softly and practice, the labial exer
cise. Let me hear the result in one
month.
AUNT MARY.
(Continued from page 13.)
keeps accounts, sends the collections
to the proper places, and keeps re
ceipts as carefully as if there were
“millions in it.”
The little Sunday School has an
average of twenty, an average collec
tion of 75c to SI.OO each Sunday morn
ing. Every Sunday morning the Sup
erintendent, Mr. Jorn Cordell, comes
four miles down the mountain to Sun
day school. A few of the faithful are
always there.
Among these the one who never
fails is Mr. Whissenhunt, the man who
has taken care of Aunt Mary for
twenty odd years —a faithful man,
a good Christian, knowing more in
many ways than some wearing bigger
labels. I love the man for his gener
ous heart. He is a gentleman by in
stinct. He doesn’t wear fine clothes.
He has never been much to school.
He thinks; he can tell a good story;
he never forgets. He has his own
notions and they hold him with a te
nacity and sincerity characteristic of
the children of the hills, yet he is not
without a sense of humor. He will
never be rich, but he is a good neigh-
bor. He would rather take a friend to
the top of old Craggy or Mt. Mitchell
and spend a week among the balsams,
go turkey hunting, bear hunting,
pheasant hunting, or shooting moun
tain boomers than feast at the king’s
house. Indeed, nothing would please
him quite so well as hunting, save a
howling wind and a great blazing
campfire on the top of old Craggy, and
a dozen good listeners while he settled
down to tell tales of adventures of
other years. He is a good story teller
—stories of all sorts of adventures, of
beast and man and the elements. Any
circumstance will touch off a story,
and if there be no circumstance, it
will go off itself. As mountain guide
and campfire companion, he is superb;
as a friend and neighbor, generous
and kind; and in gentle ministeries to
Aunt Mary in her age a good Samari
tan..
These gentle folk, sincere and true,
in quiet ways live their life and, like
Enoch, walk with God; but even the
mountains do not have many such as
these —nor any other spot in the world.
They are unique, the best of their
kind: and, so far as I’m concerned,
they suit me —on a summer vocation,
or any other time.

THE PIANOLESS HOME.
Have you ever visited a home where
discord had usurped the place of sweet
accord and where time seemed to hang

questionable places, all for the want
of proper entertainment at home?

durable as oil paint. It adheres to any
surface, wood, stone, or brick, spreads
and looks like oil paint and costs about
one-fourth as much.
