THE CHILD IN THE MIDST.
Continued from page 6.)
great who is not truly natural. Ar
tificialism is ever despised by the
world.
Then in its dependence. No one
can look upon a child, and not be im
pressed with its dependence for every
thing that it needs. Dependence for
food, shelter, clothing. Dependence
upon its parents for learning in every
thing —learning to walk, and talk, and
care for itself, in fact, everything that
is afterwards to characterize it as a
man or woman.
So it is with the man or woman
who is greatest in the Kingdom of
Heaven. There is consciousness of
perpetual dependence upon God. The
greater a man becomes, the more the
consciousness of dependence masters
him.
Now, Jesus said to these disciples,
“If you want to be great in the King
dom of Heaven, you have got to be
unselfish. If you are trying to get
the first place in the Kingdom you
may just as well quit, because you will
not get it. The greatest places goes
to the man who is not trying' to get
if.”
John Ruskin, in his “Modern Pain
ters,” states this same truth in a most
beautiful and forceful manner. He
says: “So far as you desire to possess
rather than to give; so far as you look
for power to command instead of to
bless; so far as your own prosperity
seems to grow out of contest or riv
alry of any kind with other men and
nations; so long as the hope before
you is for supremacy instead of love,
and your desire to be greatest instead
of least; first instead of last —so tong
are you serving the last enemy, death;
and you shall have death’s crown,
with the worm coil in it, and death's
wages, with the worm feeding on them;
kindred of the earth shall von be
come, saying to the grave, ‘Thou are
my father,’ and to the worm. ‘Thou art
my mother and my sis'er.' ’’ Finally,
in its trust. This brings us to the cli
max, for the most beautiful thing
about the life of a child is its trust
fulness. Chrysostom, speaking of the
child, says. “The most striking thing
about a child is its trust. You may
show him a queen with a crown, but
he will prefer his mother, though she
♦be clothed in rags, ft can never see
anything wrong in those it loves.’’ I
remember very well when I was a.
child, I used to have a frightful dream
every now and then. Some people call
ed it a nightmare. How frightened I
would get. Final!v. thev put me along
side of my mother’s bed in a small bed.
And when I was almost a young man
I slept by my mother’s bed in that
way. for the purpose of having her
reach her hand out. ami touch me when
I had that dream. The touch would
drive away all the nightmares. Beau
tiful, sweet, trustful confidence. Just
to know that she was near, nothing
could harm me, awake or asleeo.
Now, Jesus said to His diseinies:
“If you would be greatest in the King
dom of Heaven, you must become like
