man Adams, 79, passed away Fri
day, August 19, 2016.
Bom in Carlton, he was the son
of the late William Buford Adams
and Susie Crow Adams. Mr.
Adams enjoyed farming and was a
well-known appliance repairman.
He was a longtime member of
Union Baptist Church. He was
preceded in death by his first wife,
Linda Jordan Adams; his second
wife, Sally Sharp Adams; step
daughter, Amy Somers; and one
sister, Blanche Dixon.
Survivors include his children,
Pam (Ricky) Hanley, Gary (Rose)
Adams, Susan (Michael) Perdue,
Scott (Faith) Adams, and Lisa
Adams; step children, Pam Hem-
minger, Lisa Jackson; siblings,
James Adams, Shirley Chandler,
Hythen Coile and Sue Chandler;
grandchildren, Heather Hanley,
Hannah Hanley, Cory Hanley,

was in the Union Baptist Church

was Captain

Commander for the Gainesville
Police Department for 28 years, 11
years with Jackson County Sher
iff’s Department as the Training
Instructor, and founding member
of the West Jackson Fire Depart
ment. He was a member of the
North Georgia Harley Own
ers Group and the Blue Knights
International Law Enforcement
Motorcycle Club. Therion loved
camping, hunting, fishing, and
was a trained gunsmith and fire
arm enthusiast. He was a loving
husband, father and grandfather.
He was preceded in death by his
parents, Therion E. and Louise
Clark Boyd.
Survivors include his wife of 53
years, Vemelle Boyd; son, Phillip
Boyd and wife Kathy, Washington
State; daughter, Anita Boyd Lewis
and husband Bruce, Hoschton;
brothers, Bobby Boyd and wife
Vivian, South Carolina, Damon
Boyd and wife Barbara, Virginia;
grandchildren, Trent Boyd, Hai

City of Hoschton cemetery.

WINDER - Sue Beddingfield
Casper, 74, passed away Sunday,
August 21, 2016.
She was of the Baptist denomi
nation. Sue was a certified nurs
ing assistant and retired from St.
Mary’s Highland Hills facility in
Athens. She was preceded in death
by her parents, James Herbert and
Gladys Sorrells Beddingfield; two
brothers, Glenn and Gene Bed-
dingfield; and a sister, Mary Nell
Harris.
Survivors include three sons,
Larry, Barry (Shelby) and Tim
Garrett, all of Winder; one grand
son, Brad Garrett; and two great
grandchildren, Noah and Lilly
Garrett.

Eunice “May” Pittman Edwards,
82, passed away on Wednesday,
August 17, 2016.
Mrs. Edwards was a native of
Athens, Clarke County. She was
preceded in death by her husband
of 53 years, Harvey Neil Edwards.
May was the daughter of the
late William Fred Pittman, Sr. and
Marina Zenobia Marlow Pittman
of the Sanford Community.
Survivors include a brother,
William Fred Pittman, Jr. (Faye),
Smyrna; a sister, Glennie Dee Pit
tman Doster, Orlando; two sons,
David Gordon (Barbara), Sanford
Community, and Blakely Glenn,
Marietta; five grandchildren,
Marina (Wendel), Erik (Nami),
Nathaniel (Talia), Terra (Frank),
and Amanda; two great-grandchil
dren, Enzo and Payton; and many
beloved nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Edwards was a graduate of
the Athens High School Class of
1950 and held an associate degree
from Oglethorpe University in
Management.
Mrs. Edwards held many posi
tions in life, most recently working
as an administrative secretary at
Ayco Corp. in Atlanta. After retir
ing, she was a real estate investor
and full-time grandmother. She
and Neil were charter members of
the High Museum of Art in Atlan
ta. During its formative years, they
helped fund the Athens Folk Music
and Dance Society at the Benefac
tor Level for many years.
Mrs. Edwards was a loving wife
and mother, grandmother, great
grandmother, and aunt. She was
a member of Gordon’s Chapel
United Methodist Church of the
Sanford Community.
Services were held Saturday,
August 20, at Gordon’s Chapel
United Methodist Church in Hull.
Interment was at the Gordon’s
Chapel United Methodist Church
Cemetery.

Edna Hammer

the passing of our beloved mom,
Edna Earl
Hammer. Mom
passed peace
fully with her
daughters by
her bedside
at 96 years of
age. Edna was
born February
16, 1920, in
Austin, Texas,
the daughter of
Ellis E. Powell
and Annie Emma Powell. Edna
was preceded in death by her hus
band, Vernon Hammer.
Edna and Vernon were married
on December 14, 1941, by the
Rev. Norman Vincent Peal at The
Marble Collegiate Church in New
York City, N.Y.
Mom started her “show biz”
career at the age of 16 at the
Casa Manana, Ft. Worth, Texas.
After traveling the USA perform
ing with the Billy Rose Dance
Troupe, mom became one of the
original “Roxyettes” at the famous
Roxy Theater in New York City.
The “Roxyettes” later became the
“Rockettes” of Radio City Music
Hall. Mom continued her “show
biz flair” in later years doing tele
vision commercials and enjoyed
performing in a few movies includ
ing “The Last Confederate Widow
Tells All” and “Forces of Nature.”
Mom decided to further her
education in the late 70’s. She
graduated Ocean County College,
Toms River, N.J. with a 4.0 and
was on the President’s Honors List.

Cook, Dawsonville, and Ellen
Zimmerman, Loganville; sons-in-
law, Bob Cook and Brad Zimmer
man; four grandchildren, Kimberly
E. Gassner, Scott R.V. Cook, Kris
tie G. Horn, and Judith E. Johnson;
and ten great-grandchildren, Alex
ander Moseley, Kelsie G. Gassner,
Braxton Horn, Braydon Horn, Kai-
tlyn Horn, Elijah Cook, Benjamin
Cook, Michael Johnson, Emma
Johnson, and Hannah Johnson,
who will miss her dearly.
Memorial services will be at
Anchor Church, 451 Ozora Rd.,
Loganville, GA, on Saturday,
October 1, 2016, at 11:30 a.m. The
family will receive friends from 10
a.m. until the time of the service at
11:30 a.m.

Frank Howland Jr.
BRASELTON - Frank Rus
sell Howland, Jr., 77, passed away
Monday, August 15, 2016.
Frank was a United States Army
veteran. He was a hunter, fisher
man, and loved camping. He was
also a Mason and a Shriner. He
was a member of the All Sea
son’s Sportsman Club since 1968
and volunteered with the Georgia
Wildlife Federation. Frank retired
after over 30 years with Atlanta
Gas Light.
Survivors include his wife of
53 years, Jane W. Howland; son,
Franklin Howland III, Dacula;
daughter, Michele Brown and
Shane Helms, Braselton; sisters,
Jackie Reeves and husband Joe,
Florida, Babette Morris, Ten
nessee, and Alycia Phillips and
husband Fred, Peachtree City;
grandchildren, Noelle, Ashley,
and Chelsea; great-grandchildren,
Kayleigh, Wyatt and Clayton; and
a host of other relatives.

the daughter of Mary Ann Landers
Kenerly and the late Thomas M.
Kenerly.
Survivors in addition to her

Kenerly; daughter, Christie Ken
erly Landers; son-in-law, Taylor
Landers and grandson, Nick Land
ers; the man by her side, Larry
Thompson; niece, Angie Bragg
and husband, B.J. Bragg; great
nieces and great nephews, Breann,
Abbey, Lexie, and Aaron Bragg;
Tommy Boyd and wife, Lisa Boyd
and child, Olivia Boyd; and a host
of cousins, Kenerlys, Landers,
Starnes, and Thomasons.
Because of Kay’s love for life,
she requested there be no funeral.
She loved people, and touched
many lives with her shinning per
sonality. She worked at Kenerly’s
Auto-Parts in Lilbum, where she
was loved by many. She was a
graduate of Berkmar High School,
Class of 1978.

E.C. was told that his promotion
from private to tech sergeant was
the quickest on record.
After returning home from the
war, E.C. began a long list of
successful entrepreneurial efforts,
which included cafe, recreation
management, farming, business
management, service station deal
ership, independent owner of sev
eral Grand National (Nascar) race
cars, and building a transportation
company from scratch.
A widower, he lost his wife of
71 years, Nelle Cameron Reid, in
August of 2014.
Survivors include three chil
dren, Suzanne, married to George
A. Holdsworth, Bill, married to
Sharon B. Reid, and Brenda, mar
ried to Hal Ramakers, who are all
living in the Atlanta area; three
grandchildren, Pamela Pearson,
Kelly Sumner, and Leah Hender
son; six great-grandchildren, Han
nah, Tatum, Aiden, Zach, Demri,
and Samantha; sister, Dorothy
Gardner, Americus; and brother
Toby Reid, Dalton.
A unique soul, E.C. was known
for his teasing. Cherished by his
family and all that had the pleasure
of knowing him, he will be greatly
missed.
A memorial service was held
at The Grove Baptist Church in
Maysville on Friday, August 19.

“Kay” Shull Schulte, 78, passed
from life on Tuesday, August 16,
2016.
A graduate of Sacred Heart
High in Atlanta, she attended
Georgetown University and St.
Francis Medi
cal Center in
Trenton, N.J.,
where she
became a reg
istered nurse.
She met and
married John
F. Schulte in
1961 and they
were trans
ferred by the
U.S. Forest
Service to different locations in
the USA before being transferred
back home to Atlanta in 1970.
Kay worked at Button Gwinnett
Hospital in Lawrenceville, and
helped open the surgical care
unit at Gwinnett Medical Center
in 1984 in Lawrenceville. She
remained there as unit director
until retirement. Since retirement,
she has worked many volunteer
hours in service type organizations
for Hoschton, as well as Prince
of Peace Catholic Church, where
she was a member. Kay will be
remembered for her commitment
to her family, her faith, and service
to others. Her hobbies were fol
lowing the grandchildren’s sport
ing events and her volunteer work.
Survivors include her husband
of 55 years, John; daughter, Deb
Schulte Long and husband Dale;
sons John Andrew Schulte and
wife Joanna, and Stephen Schulte
and wife Amne; and grandchil
dren, Mariamne (Mini) Schulte,

beth Bennett Waters. Mrs. Varner
was retired from Commerce City
School System, where she worked
in the lunchroom and she was a
member of Bold Spring United
Methodist Church. Mrs. Varner
was preceded in death by her sister,
Nana May Phillips.

Jeffery Whitfield
JEFFERSON - Jeffery Ste
phen Whitfield, 56, died Tuesday,
August 16, 2016.
Jeffery Stephen Whitfield was
bom in 1960, in San Diego, Calif.,
and grew up
in Jefferson.
He gradu
ated from
Jefferson
City Schools
in 1978 and
went on to
earn a bach
elor’s degree
in criminal
justice and a
master’s degree in public admin
istration. Jeff married Cindy Pen
dergrass Vandeventer in 1983,
and together they began a life of
adventure and public service. He
was preceded in death by his par
ents Nathan Eugene Whitfield and
Mary Lyle Whitfield.
Jeff served as a Lieutenant with
the University of Georgia Police
Department for 27 years, most
recently mentoring officers as shift
commander. He was coordinator
of the UGAPD Crisis Interven
tion Team, with whom he helped
students in times of mental health
emergency.
Jeff served six years in the Navy
Reserve before joining the Army
as a medevac pilot and flying in
Operation Desert Storm. After
completing his military terms, he
served as the Chief of the Jefferson
Police Department and the Deputy
Chief of the Bibb County Schools
Police Department. In 1996, Jeff
left the police force to join the
Federal Bureau of Investigation
in Dothan, Ala., where he was a
special agent. After seven years
with the FBI, Jeff returned to the
UGAPD to be closer to his father
and brothers.
In a Red & Black Veteran’s
Day profile, Jeff said “I’ve truly
been blessed to have been able to
do everything on my list of what I
wanted to be when I grew up.” He
committed his life to serving his
community and his country. In his
free time, Jeff enjoyed spending
time with his family, taking care of
his dogs and playing golf.
Survivors include his beloved
wife, Cindy; his two sons, Tyler
Stephen and Kevin Jeffery Whit
field; three brothers, Ronald
Eugene Whitfield (Linda), Ray
mond Lyle Whitfield (Rhonda),
and Timothy Wayne Whitfield
(Belinda); and his dog Jake.
Funeral services were held on
Saturday, August 20, in the Gali
lee Christian Church with Minister
Tom Plank officiating. Members
of the University of Georgia Police
Department served as honorary
pallbearers. The burial was in the
Evans Memory Gardens.

dedicated years of service with the

Sales and Distributing. Mr. Wof
ford was preceded in death by two
brothers, Ralph and Allen Wofford.
Survivors include his wife,
Reba Payne Wofford, Jefferson;
two daughters, Laura Brock and
her husband Nelson, Jefferson,
Lou Ann Puckett and her hus
band William, Jefferson; son,
Lewis Wofford and his wife Lisa,
Ac worth; brother, Earl Wofford
and his wife Deborah, Comer; and
five grandchildren, Katie Roth and
her husband Joe, Lee Brock, Will
Puckett, Drew Puckett, and Chris
topher Wofford.
Funeral services were held

the Rev. Ross Wheeler officiating.
Burial was in the Bethany Unit
ed Methodist Church Cemetery.
