SUMMER WORK
The Apalachee High School FFA chapter held its annual “Beef Up Barrow”
food drive recently.
AHS FFA helps ‘Beef up Barrow’
By Ashley Sims
Apalachee FFA Reporter
During the summer months, classes may
not be in session but that didn’t keep the
Apalachee High School FFA chapter from
working hard to make a positive difference
in the community.
Once again, the chapter held its annual
“Beef Up Barrow" Food Drive. This sum
mer food collection benefits the Apalachee
cluster’s Food 2 Kids program and helps
get the year started with a surplus of items
that can be distributed to students and fam
ilies in need.
Apalachee's Food 2 Kids coordinator,
Amy Bishop, said: “Many students in our
area rely on the schools to provide a
healthy, well-balanced breakfast and lunch
to them on a daily basis.
The Food 2 Kids program in Barrow
County is partnered with the Northeast
Georgia Foodbank and allows students to
take home a bag of food a week to meet
their needs over the weekend until they
return to school.
“Parents are asked to complete an appli
cation at their school and are then provided
one bag per student per week of food for
the weekend. At Apalachee High School,
we have been blessed with a number of
generous donations through the Beef up
Barrow program as well as donations from
our faculty and staff that also get sent
home with our families in need. I have
been truly blessed to be able to work with
such a dedicated and generous faculty to be
able to serve these wonderful and deserv
ing families whom are so grateful for this
assistance.”
This year, with the food and money that
was donated, Bishop and others will be able
to distribute more than 4,500 items.
The AHS FFA chapter would like to
thank its partners Barrow County Farm
Bureau and the Barrow County Extension
Office for their assistance with promotion
and collection of items.
Guest lecture, book signing planned
A guest lecture and book signing by
author Valerie Frey will be held at 11:15
a.m.. Tuesday, Sept. 20, at the Barrow
County Senior Center, 80 Lee St. in
Winder.
Her newest book, “Preserving Family
Recipes: How to Save and Celebrate
Your Food Traditions,” was released on
November 1, 2015 by the University of
Georgia Press.
“Please join us for this special event at
the senior center.” leaders said.

tion.
