Three local Democrats to be on November ballot
Special to the
Barrow News-Journal
This year more can
didates are running for
office in Barrow County
from the Democratic Party
than there have been in 25
years.
Two Barrow County
Board of Commissioners
(BOC) seats and one Bar-
row County School Sys
tem seat are being contest
ed by Democrats Nov. 8.
When asked why coun
ty Democrats have taken
so long to run candidates,
Dwight Acey, county party
chairman said: “We have
run single candidates over
the past few years. Our
problems have been the
false assumption that the
overwhelming majority of
voters in Barrow County
are registered Republicans
(most are non-declared).
As a result a lot of poten
tially great candidates
were afraid to run. Con
sequently, there were little
to no options on the Bar-
row ballot. This has caused
the Republican primaries
to be the deciding factor
for almost every office in
Barrow County. Things are
rapidly changing.”
This year the Donald
Trump candidacy has been
very controversial with a
number of key Republi
cans refusing to endorse
him, Acey said.
“The rapidly changing

have caused the Clinton
campaign to invest here
and to treat Georgia as a
contested state,” said the
Barrow Democratic Party
chairman. “It remains to
be seen how much money
she will pour into Georgia,
but it is expected to be sub-
stantialand that is inspir
ing for local Democrats all
around the state including
Barrow County.”.
The local November bal
lot has three Democrats on
it: Mike Pope for Board
of Commissioners Dis
trict 3, Dwight Acey for
BOC District 2 and Brit
tany Mayweather for the
Barrow County Board of
Education District 6 seat.
Mayweather, if she
wins, will be the first Afri
can-American female to
ever serve on the school
board.
“My goal is to promote
parental engagement,”
said Mayweather, “And to
help find ways to increase
test scores, help strategize
on ways to improve our
graduation rates, find ways
to utilize our budgets in
areas greatly suffering. I
am focused on improving
student achievement aca
demically. spiritually, and
emotionally.”

Acey said: “Bill is
a great guy who is well
meaning. I have met a
large number of people
in the district and almost
without exception people
tell me they do not trust the
decisions he makes. The
two complaints that come
up most are how much he
cost them in taxes by his
massive Barrow County
Airport expansion invest
ment fiasco and the costly
posting of the Ten Com
mandments in the county
building against state law.”
Pastor Mike Pope attend

College. Gwinnett Tech
nical College and Beulah
Bible College. He has been
in the ministry for more
than 35 years. He pastored
both in Cleveland, Ohio
and in Winder for 25 years
under the leadership of
Bishop Wiley Jackson of
Atlanta.
Acey holds a bachelor’s
degree from New Jersey
City University and is a
retired law enforcement
officer. He has been the
chairman of the Barrow
County Democratic Party
for five years.
The Barrow County
Democratic Party hosted
a presentation of its can
didates on Aug. 27. Pre
senters included City of
Winder councilman Mike
Healan and State Repre
sentative Dewey McClain
(D-Gwinnett). McClain
is also a former Atlanta
Falcon and President of
the Atlanta North Georgia
Labor Council AFL-CIO.

R.S.V. Acts 2:44-45
A ristotle claimed that humans are
political animals, meaning that we
live in a political society or
community, remarking further that only a
beast or a god would live by himself
away from others. One implication of
this view is that our minds are part
and parcel of the social fabric. Our
minds develop socially, by being
raised to speak a particular language
in a particular culture. And we are
literally connected to other people's
brains in that the smile on our face will
register in their brain and cause their brain
to make them smile, and their smiles will
have the same effect on us. We have been
taught the message of individualism for so
long that we don't often see the many ways
in which we are connected. Our minds truly
are social, think of how often we complete
each other's sentences or feel each other's
joys and sorrows. But, the philosophy of
individualism emphasizes our separateness
and makes us think that we can be just as
fully human as distinct individuals, as we
can when we are part of a larger group like
a family or a society. Since we live in a
world where it is possible to live alone, and
more people are choosing to do so, it
appears that at times we hold up the
individual as more important than the
collective.
