Farm Bureau receives District Awards
The Barrow Coun
ty Farm Bureau (BCFB)
was recognized for its
outstanding member pro
grams during the Georgia
Farm Bureau 4th District
annual meeting, held Oct.
25 in Greensboro.
Ray Fowler is the BCFB
president.
The BCFB Legislative
Committee, chaired by
Terry Hollifield. received
the GFB 4th District Out
standing Legislative Pro
gram Award.
Among its other activi
ties, the committee planned
a legislative meeting with
elected officials from the
local and state levels.
The meeting, attended
by 65 people, allowed area
farmers to interact with
county commissioners,
state representatives and
senators.
Farmers were present
ed with the opportunity to
raise concerns about pub
lic policies affecting their
farms.
BCFB office manager
Staci Hubbard received
the 4th District Out
standing Office Manag
er Award. Hubbard has
worked for BCFB for the
past three years and was
promoted to office manag
er in 2015.
As office manager, she
coordinates all of BC’FB's
agricultural advocacy and
literacy activities.
Founded in 1937. Geor
gia Farm Bureau is the
state's largest general farm
organization and has 158
county offices.
Its volunteer members
actively participate in
local, state and national
activities that promote
agriculture awareness to
their non-farming neigh
bors.
GFB offers its members
a wide variety of bene
fits. including insurance,
but enrollment in member
benefits is optional and not
a requirement for mem
bership.
NGMC offers
new treatment
for heart patients
Northeast Geor
gia Medical Center
(NGMC) now has a
device smaller than a
dime that can help keep
heart failure patients
from being admitted to
the hospital.
Approved in late
May by the U.S. Food
and Drug Administra
tion (FDA), the Car-
dioMEMS HF System is
a miniature, battery-free
implantable sensor/mon
itor. A catheter delivery
system deploys the sen
sor permanently within
a pulmonary artery.
The CardioMEMS
system continuously
measures the patient's
heart rate and artery
pressures.
On October 19, Chris
topher Leach, MD.
implanted the system
in a patient for the first
time at NGMC Gaines
ville.
“The CardioMEMS
HF System is an innova
tive technology and has
the ability to treat and
improve the outcome for
heart failure patients,”
said Dr. Leach, an inter
ventional cardiologist
with The Heart Center
of NGMC.
“Once implanted, the
wireless sensor sends
pressure readings to a
monitoring system. We
are now able to get real
numbers and measure
ments in real time.”
Heart failure is a dis
ease that leaves patients
in a dangerous state, in
which symptoms can
worsen at any time -
usually resulting in
extended hospitaliza
tion. The CardioMEMS
system allows a patient’s
cardiologist to monitor
their symptoms both day
and night.
“When a patient has
increased artery pres
sures, it's the first sign
that there is an abnor
mality,” said Bren
da Hott, MD. medical
director of Heart Fail
ure at NGMC. “If those
symptoms are detected
when it is happening, we
can change the patient’s
care plan and therapy
- which thereby reduc
es the likelihood that
they would progress to
requiring hospitaliza
tion.”
You can request an
appointment to speak
with a cardiologist by
visiting www.heartng-
mc.org or calling 770-
534-2020.

We Are All Connected

And all who
believed were
together and had all
things in common;
and they sold their
possessions and
goods, and
distributed them to
all, as any had need.
R.S.V. Acts 2:44-45
A ristotle claimed that humans are
political animals, meaning that we
live in a political society or
community, remarking further that only a
beast or a god would live by himself
away from others. One implication of
this view is that our minds are part
and parcel of the social fabric. Our
minds develop socially, by being
raised to speak a particular language
in a particular culture. And we are
literally connected to other people's
brains in that the smile on our face will
register in their brain and cause their brain
to make them smile, and their smiles will
have the same effect on us. We have been
taught the message of individualism for so
long that we don't often see the many ways
in which we are connected. Our minds truly
are social, think of how often we complete
each other's sentences or feel each other's
joys and sorrows. But, the philosophy of
individualism emphasizes our separateness
and makes us think that we can be just as
fully human as distinct individuals, as we
can when we are part of a larger group like
a family or a society. Since we live in a
world where it is possible to live alone, and
more people are choosing to do so, it
appears that at times we hold up the
individual as more important than the
collective.
