BARROW 4-H MIDDLE SCHOOL
ROBOTICS TEAM COMPETES AT ATHENS ACADEMY
The Barrow County 4-H middle school robotics team, the Cloverbots, com
peted at the District FIRST Lego League competition held at Athens Academy
on Dec. 3. The students compete in three categories: Robot performance
and design, Project, and Core Values. The Cloverbots were the top perform
ers for the core values portion of the competition. The award recognizes a
team that is able to accomplish more together than they could as individuals
through shared goals, strong communication, effective problem solving and
excellent time management. The team members were: Erica McLocklin (sixth
grade, Haymon-Morris Middle), Kelly Coles (seventh grade, Russell Middle),
Mya Buhite (sixth grade, HMMS), Lauren Richardson (eighth grade, Bear
Creek Middle), Isabella Bane (seventh grade, BCMS), Colton Rutledge (sixth
grade, Westside Middle), Mia Gonzales (seventh grade, RMS), Dade Pelfrey
(sixth grade, WMS), and Evelyn Rogers (seventh grade, homeschool). The
team was coached by Tiffany Coles and Curtis Mathis.
Stewart named distinguished graduate
as nationally-ranked ROTC cadet
Austin L. Stewart of Wind
er has been named a Distin
guished Military Graduate.
Stewart, a cadet at the Uni
versity of North Georgia, is
majoring in business man
agement.
This year, 34 UNG cadets
are ranked in the top 20 per
cent in the nation among
more than 5,000 Reserve
Officers' Training Corps
(ROTC) cadets assessed by
U.S. Army Cadet Command,
which earns them the desig
nation of Distinguished Mili
tary Graduate.
Additionally, eight of
those cadets are ranked in the
top 10 percent in the nation.
Cadets are ranked on the
national Order of Merit List
(OML) by achieving supe
rior grade point averages,
strong performance in the
Army physical fitness test,
and proving their worth as
exceptional leaders in their
college ROTC training.
“We are very proud
of these young men and
women. This is a tremen
dous individual accomplish
ment, but is also a reflec
tion of the collective effort
and teamwork between the
military department and the
academic community here
at UNG,” said Maj. Steven
Devitt, executive officer of
the Department of Military
Science.
“The support we receive
from the academic leader
ship at UNG allows us to
leverage capabilities other
programs simply do not
have, and our cadets leave
here frilly prepared to lead
soldiers as second lieutenants
in the U.S. Army.”

And all who
believed were
together and had all
things in common;
and they sold their
possessions and
goods, and
distributed them to
all, as any had need.
R.S.V. Acts 2:44-45
■ ristotle claimed that humans are
It political animals, meaning that we
^■ive in a political society or
community, remarking further that only a
beast or a god would live by himself
away from others. One implication of
this view is that our minds are part
and parcel of the social fabric. Our
minds develop socially, by being
raised to speak a particular language
in a particular culture. And we are
literally connected to other people's
brains in that the smile on our face will
register in their brain and cause their brain
to make them smile, and their smiles will
have the same effect on us. We have been
taught the message of individualism for so
long that we don't often see the many ways
in which we are connected. Our minds truly
are social, think of how often we complete
each other's sentences or feel each other's
joys and sorrows. But, the philosophy of
individualism emphasizes our separateness
and makes us think that we can be just as
fully human as distinct individuals, as we
can when we are part of a larger group like
a family or a society. Since we live in a
world where it is possible to live alone, and
more people are choosing to do so, it
appears that at times we hold up the
individual as more important than the
collective.
